World Sight Day Outreaches Apiadu Basic School (Group B-Geriatrics)

Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be

Working with the aged is always an interesting case, not because they are difficult to deal it whatsoever but rather the diagnosis you are likely to encounter whiles working with them. The array of clinical diagnosis is so wide such that you feel exhilarated to work with them just out of curiosity to find out what comes up next.

Apaidu the geriatrics group was on one block whiles the pediatrics group was at the opposite block, it is better to keep the kids from their parents in certain cases, sometimes the kids feel shy delineating their complains in the presence of their parents especially the adolescents, it is one of the changes that comes with the feel for independence although these kids were just primary kids, we still thought it wise to go ahead with the segregation.

A common observation that was seen in the aged was chorio-retinal changes which happens to be an indication most times of degenerations, upon observations it is then prudent that the clinician takes a critical look at the macula to ascertain that no macula degenerations are occurring after which you may continue to analyse the other parts of the retina. Sometimes getting some of these diagnosis caught on time may go a long way to save the vision of the patient. It is for some of these reasons why we continue to do what we do.

What is @bettervision about?

@bettervision is is a project initiated by @nattybongo and friends to give back to the society the knowledge and skill acquired through the Optometric Studies in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.It is an outreach system where we visit the less privileged communities to offer free eye screening services and education to the people within the community

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
To reduce or prevent vision loss through diseases such as glaucoma, cataract and refractive errors.

To enlighten the majority of the Ghanaian population about the importance of proper visual care.

To conscientize people on the need for regular eye checks

To get more people to have their wards screened within the Critical periods of a Child’s Vision Development; thus from ages 3 to till about 10 years.

To help the blind and people with low vision live a better life within the society through education of the general public to stop stigmatization.
