Global Kitchen (Melbourne, Australia): A Tasteem Review
It is pretty rare that we eat out for breakfast... really, most of the time... as soon as we wake up, the first thing on our mind is not getting dressed up and walking out to get food! However nice a breakfast could be... nothing beats staying at home in a pair of comfy shoes and a slow morning coffee with no need to go anywhere!
However, there are times when you are forced to go out and find food for breakfast... such as when you are on holiday, and staying at a location for just a single day (so it isn't worth stocking up on breakfast foods...). If I were travelling by myself, I would just skip breakfast and go straight on to an early lunch... however, my kids and wife are of a different mind about skipping breakfast...
So, on a recent holiday back to Australia... we found ourselves looking for breakfast in Melbourne... the supposed city of good food... was that just for real meals? or would breakfast also be a decent feed as well?
The Space
The place where we were staying was pretty much in the centre of the city... and so it was all glass buildings all around... not really the sort of thing that you want in the morning when you are bleary eyed and stumbling around the street trying to shake off the sleepy headed feeling and trying not to look like you are drunk in the middle of the Central Business District!
The interior of Global Kitchen was quite spacious... and saw quite a lot of early morning coffee traffic. Very few people were sitting down to eat... it really seemed to be more a lunching sort of place, but it did serve all day breakfast as well.
Interestingly enough, there was also a sushi section... which wasn't open for breakfast...
The Menu
I'm afraid that there was only a wall mounted menu that was quite high up... not sure that I really got the best shot of it... however, all the normal cooked breakfast sort of items were here... ham, eggs, sausages... that sort of thing...
Otherwise, there was a wide assortment of pastries and muffins to order from... more of a point and click affair for that sort of food...
Thankfully, the coffee menu was much easier to read and decipher... I probably should have had the coffee before trying to order food! It's pretty amazing how much Australia has gotten expensive in the over a decade since we have been away...
The Food
The kids had pancakes with maple syrup and strawberries... and they were a hit... well, the kids will always love this combination... so, they are an easy audience to please! I still find it strange these days to see fluffy pancakes... I've really gotten used to crepe like ones... the kids did remark on it... before stuffing their faces...
Fried eggs... I love fried eggs that are just the right sort of runny... however, I know that it will make me feel queasy afterwards... so, I never do it at home. However, I always seem to order it if I am eating breakfast at a restaurant... my wife thinks I'm an idiot for doing that. The eggs were great... and the bread was also pretty decent... however, despite all of that, I felt queasy afterwards (not the fault of the restaurant!).
I'm afraid the coffee was a big big letdown... okay, for the first coffee in the morning... anything should be okay... watery, not too much taste... I didn't like it...
The Experience
Well, we didn't really choose the Global Kitchen because of any recommendation other than the fact it was the first place the we saw after walking down the road! It's okay, but given the choice... I think I would have walked a bit further to see what else was on offer....
There was nothing exactly wrong with the place (apart from the coffee...), but it just wasn't really that great... food was good, but not really anything special.
The staff were friendly, but it was really a factory line operation to service the morning office crowd. Maybe that put me off a bit...
Would I come back... well, I wouldn't NOT come back, but I don't think that I would seek out the place again... Melbourne is such a large place with so many great places to eat... this would have been decent enough in a different city... but in a city that prides itself on food, there is just too many other good places to discover!

Great review as usual. I actually liked the kids pancake more than the adult meal!
Acually... so did I! Thanks for the support and curation!
