Zebedeus (Den Haag, Netherlands): A Tasteem Review

Second time writing this, so let's see if I can improve on the charm and the incredibly witty banter of the first time (it didn't post...)!... or maybe I just try to write it again!

Anyway, recently, my my wife and I planned a little date night... a kid's free night where we can just go out and relive the life of being carefree adults with no dependants! Often this means we need to get out of the house, and find somewhere nice to eat.

We were going to return to one of our favourite Mexican places in Den Haag, but it ended up being closed on the night that we wanted to go, sooooo... after a bit of frantic last minute Googling... we settled on this restaurant, Zebedeus.

The Space

Set in the shadow of the Grote Kerk of Den Haag, it is quite an easy place to miss... as you really can walk by and think it is just an arm of the church itself. However, the giveaway is the menu stand out the front, and the tables and umbrellas. Still, it could pass for the information centre for the church....

Once you are inside, the decor and atmosphere is quite nice. We arrived early in the evening, and so we it was quite nice when there were fewer people. However, the room is quite narrow and long... and so as the night went further, I was starting to think that the table next to us was just a touch too close!

The Menu

IMG_20190225_181752.jpg

Finger food, or just some light snacks are possible... as you can just drop in for a little drink. Possibly in the warmer months, the outdoor seating would be nice to spend time in... with a nice cold drink, and some snacks! However, we were here for dinner, so we skipped over this menu!

The menu is a comfortable size, I really prefer restaurants that have a short concise menu of things that they do well, instead of those that cram in a million things and you are overwhelmed with choice with no idea what might be good or not.

Looking down the menu, there are some interesting spins on some fairly well known dishes... everything does sound pretty good!

IMG_20190225_181748.jpg

There was an interesting cocktail selection... not really my thing, but it was definitely something that caught the eye of my wife!

The drinks menu is rounded out with a decent selection of wines and beers, with some very intriguing choices on offer.

The Drinks

IMG_20190225_182455.jpg

My wife eventually settled on the "Bloom" cocktail, a mix of Gin, Raspberry, Mint and Rose Lemonade. The little edible flowers were also a nice touch. Gin isn't my drink of choice, but it was quite a tasty drink none the less!

I ended up settling on an alcoholic Ginger Beer which was not quite as photogenic. I had no idea that Ginger Beer could be alcoholic, so I just had to try it! Pretty good stuff!

Plus... a few little snacks to keep us satisfied whilst we were choosing the main meals.

The Food

IMG_20190225_185010.jpg

The starters... a "Pulpo", which is Octopus. Everytime I go to Spain, I love the way they do Pulpo there, and so I was hoping for a similar experience here! Sadly, it wasn't to be... the meat was cold and overcooked... giving it a terrible texture. However, all the accompaniaments to the meal (sauce and other little flavour pieces) were very good... so it was quite disappointing that the main part of the dish wasn't up to scratch.

IMG_20190225_191823.jpg

For me, I settled on the Iberico Wangetjes for my main course. Pork Cheeks are one of my favourite cuts of meat, and so it was a tough choice between this and the Deer Steak for me. This was a huge step up from the starter dish. Definitely a great redemption! Next time I'm swapping to also try the Deer....

IMG_20190225_191826.jpg

My wife ended up ordering a fish from the specials menu. Unfortunately, the specials menu was told to us by the waitress... and I thought it might be too weird to video her reciting the menu to include in the review! The fish was also great though, not dry at all and with great sides! Starter dish was completely forgetten about!

IMG_20190225_202354.jpg

Finally, to dessert! If we thought that last (Mains) dish was a great step up... well, this was the highlight! A warm Rubyt Chocolate Lava Cake with Pear Ice Cream for my wife and...

IMG_20190225_202358.jpg

... a Pumpkin Creme Brulee for me! I can't resist a Cremem Brulee... and this was no exception. Sure, the Pumpkin spin was a little bit unusual... but it works!

The Experience

Great atmosphere (aside from the proximity of the tables) and a friendly staff enhace the good food. Unfortunately, we had a big miss with the starters dish... but the rest of the meal (both Mains and Dessert) were really quite good!

I can see that in summer or the warmer months, that the outdoor areas would be a great place to either have lunch or an early dinner. We will definitely be returning to try other dishes on the menu!

Re-write is not easy compared to writing new things. I know how annoying that is.

Btw, a great review as always, especially with photos of foods that spoil the eye.

#tasteem-curation

Thanks for the support and curation! Yes, rewrites are annoying... But it doesn't hurt either! I think I did end up making a better one second time around!

Ugh, its always such a big disappointment when you dine out and the starter is a miss...but luckily the desserts looked pretty tasty. I noticed a nice sticky chocolate pecan pie on the menu, but the lava cake your wife chose would be a great choice too! :) Overall, I bet it was a nice evening out with out the kiddos!

I think the night out without the kiddies was the best part! The nice food and drinks were a bonus! Yes, the starter was a definite miss... but at least it leaves room to get better!

That is one detailed review of the restaurant brother. I could definitely go for that lava cake right now. lol Well, it is great things got better for you after the starter dish. Sometimes we order things which look and sound good but sometimes it is a hit or miss...

Thank for sharing your review with us, have a great day. :)

Thanks! I was pretty happy things got better as well... it was an incredibly disappointing start to the eating part of the evening!

I would visit this place for the pumpkin creme brulé alone! It looks incredible. The main courses look a bit meaty for my liking - I would choose the fish or the udon.
I like the way they recommend specific wines with each course. A very good marketing technique.

Fish would be the way to go... Udon, might be okay... but I would rather go to a Japanese restaurant for that! The pumpkin creme brule, weird... but nice!

Wow, That's a great review! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Must have sucked to have something crappy to start up with but the desert looks so lovely!

Yes... the start was disappointing... but it was up and up from there!

Howdy sir bengy! Great review and that place looks wonderful!

Yep... it started not so good... but rapidly improved!

Zebedeus was a fisherman in Gallilea (first century AC) and clearly did not know Pulpo!

Hahahaa!!! Nice reference... obscure but very interesting!

The place is gorgeous, I want to go there))

It did end up being quite nice! Just perhaps a touch too cosy!
