A Jewel in the Adriatic Sea, The Bay of Kotor

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

One cannot help but admire the wing bay the Adriatic Sea in southwestern Montenegro surrounded by two massifs of the Dinaric Alps, the bay of Kotor.

The old town of Kotor is contained within the city walls and a well preserved and restored medieval town with notable buildings including a Cathedral built in 1166. The Bay region is also under the protection of UNESCO due to its rich cultural heritage. WP.

A view form the city walls.

Throughout the centuries, many empires battled for control of the city. In the 10th century, it was an autonomous city of the Byzantine Empire. From 1186 to 1371, it was a free city of medieval Serbia. It was from 1420 and 1797 under Venetian Republic of Venice. (WP)

The Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, an islets off the coast of Perast in Bay of Kotor. According to local legend, the islet was made over the centuries by local seamen who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the rock in the sea in 1452. Upon returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the Bay. Over time, the islet gradually emerged from the sea. Would love to visit the bay of Kotor some day.

Thank you, it is definitely worth a visit.

It's the first time I've heard the Bay of Kotor and I appreciate you sharing it with us. It looks like a really cool place to visit

What is the best way to get there?

Montenego is realy a small country, best and fastest way is though the city of Tivat, 15 milies or so. Montenergo airlines and most major airlines fly there from most international airports.

Beautiful photographs. They look like postcards.
