Art for Games - Rise of Champions - The Graveyard
Hello Steemers!
For the past 4 years I have been the artist for the online game 'Rise of Champions'.
The game is played by thousands of people everyday and even after all this time there are still new people finding the game, trying it and keep playing it.
The numbers of players have been going down a little, but since February this year we put in some renewed spirit and a ton of updates on content and what not to renew the game and bring it up to date!
So one of the things on the list to up-date was the art for the keep/town, the buildings and the map to make room for new buildings.
This old buildings were just old.. out of shape and had to go!
So we just had to get rid off it and make something new!
Which became this background and buildings:
One of the additions will be the 'Graveyard' building.
As a community event thing I livestreamed me painting the building and released it on my YT channel.
You can check out the timelapsed video of the event here:
The finished art piece for the building came out to look like this:
Creating artwork for games like this is more difficult than it seems.. The designs need to be very readable since they are often very small on a screen.
So most of the time you can't get away with super elaborate designs for simple things.. People won't immediately get it and if that happens too often with designs in a game,, it set the player off.
Anway! Rise of Champions is one of the projects I have been involved with since the beginning and I'm fairly proud and happy that it is still around with people happily playing it! :)
So all our effort (on the dev side) isn't wasted!
If it peaked your interest and want to find out what the game is about check out www.riseofchampions.com
Thank you for reading! Hope to see you around! ^^
Cheers,
Rogier
Very cool man, I'll have to check this game out for sure.
Can you offer any advice for anyone who may want to get into the industry? I graduated highschool in 1997 and wanted to be a game artist all the way back then but always got steered away into stable employment getting a trade and being in the military. I now work in a youth prison, which really sucks the life out of me, and I often regret I never took the chance to find out how to become a game artist. You can see from my Steemit blog I can do a bit of digital art already (and have tons more I've never blogged) but have never taken the step to go to Uni or learn how to do it for a profession. If you've got any advice I'd love to hear it.
Keep up the good work and definitely gonna check out your game and follow you on Steemit :)
Hey mate,
Thank you for your response! ..
Okay where to start! I never went to any school to learn how to do this.. So it is definitely possible to just train yourself and get jobs/work in the game-industry.
The most important thing is that you love doing it.. A lot of people enjoy drawing or painting..but would never want to do it as a fulltime thing.. where everyday you wake up and 'work' on a painting or drawing. Your hobby becomes your job in most cases (not always!) and the romance and fun can go away! :D It is with every job i think.
Anyway, some tips or advice.. Determine what you want to do within the art department.. 3d artist, texture artist, illustrator, concept artist etc.. Theres a bunch of different kinds of roles you may need to take on during some project. ( the example above, I was the only artist on the job which meant I was designing all the armors, backgrounds, particle effects and also the UI)
Learn how to draw (on paper I prefer) and really study all the fundamentals of the craft. Anatomy / Perspective / color & light / composition ..
The better you get at being an 'artist' the more chance you have at landing a job in the games industry.
And very important.. Share your work, ask for critique and try to take that and apply it to the next image.. Every image you do.. just remember that the next one will be better! :D
Thanks for your lengthy reply!
Being able to get somewhere without schooling is a definite bonus as I'd have to move myself and family to a bigger city if this was the case. I do have my ups and downs when it comes to art, often drawing, traditional painting and digitally painting like a mad man but then don't do anything for a while. I have wondered if it would go from joyous to "just another job" if it was my main source of employment which would be something I'll have to dig deep and figure out.
I guess with having a family my biggest fear would be not having stable employment. Is this an issue for you? I've dabbled with 3D Zbrush but I didn't find it too much fun so I'd probably more head towards illustration or some area with 2D art where I can have a bit of creative freedom. If you get bored some time feel free to critique the heck out of my art. Most of it is on my page Facebook Space Ginger :)
You've given me (and others reading this no doubt) lots to think about and also the inspiration to see if it could be a worthwhile career. I'll definitely keep practicing my art and maybe even push myself to get back into anatomy studies to see if I can discipline myself to grow at the fundamentals :)
This artwork got an invite from me. I'll be glad to know if the game can be played on Android devices. Great graphics!
Thank you @tomfreeman :) The game can be played using the 'puffin' browser on android devices.. its the only flash supporting mobile browser :)
What an awesome achievement. Thats definitely a big thing to be proud of. Ill have to check this game out. Great going :)
Thanks mate! :D Let me know what you think :O ^^
What a great way to make a living! I bet many people would envy you!
haha thanks! Yeah.. I sometimes have to pinch myself to see if this is indeed happening .. Im super happy with my job!
Oh wow I have always dreamt of being involved in a game development not just a player.
Will definitely check this out.
ah thats cool to hear :)
nowadays i think it gets easier and easier to sort of be involved. Theres games being made that are still heavily relying on the input of their audience and beta testers :O
1 project im also involved with is still very much in the development phase ' www.archmagerises.com ' and the community helps alot :D
Congrats man !! It's really cool to see what you done for the game here. Qnd yeah, there is so many things to take into consideration while making a videogame... (especially 3d ones with all these limitations about polygons, vertices ....haha)
Thanks mate! Yeah but even with flash/2d online games.. rendering engine limits, sizes for certain sprites and what not.. ive found myself cutting away pixel by pixel just to meet the KB limit :D
