Stripping The Life Out Of A Photo or Just Changing Perspective?steemCreated with Sketch.

On One Of Our Trips To Negril Jamaica ..

I took one of those cool monochromatic silhouette type photos. The sun was setting perfectly and the color was fantastic. The lens was pointing right toward the sun, stripping any other colors from things in the foreground. I had my wife stand in the water and waited for a small wave to wash up over her feet and surround her in a swirl. I snapped the frame and ended up with this photograph. I love it, other than its a bit blotchy with pixels due to the low quality underwater camera we had at the time. I hate taking my good camera to humid sand ridden locations, plus have you ever tried to shove a large camera into a room safe?? yeah, it doesn't work. So back to the photograph ..

As Many Of You Know ..

I like to play around with black and white photography. Sometimes I shoot in black and white. Sometimes I alter the shots later. It's been a while since I rolled my own film or used ilford 100 B&W, but time has not been my friend and chemicals are no longer as cheep as they used to be. Either way, I like B&W. Many times I alter a photograph and am left in disappointment; with less of an emotional connection to it. Well this happened today as I was killing time between speakers at a conference. I was playing with a few of my favorite photographs and one of them was this Jamaican sunset shot above.

Here is the shot in Black and White..

I was very surprised when ..

I converted it to black and white. I was left feeling cold and emotionless rather than thinking it was a different and cool perspective. I say surprised, because of the level of emotion or lack there of that I felt almost instantaneously. I quickly changed it back to color and moved on. Later during one of the boring speeches, I began to ponder why I felt this way. I think we have emotional connections driven by memories that make us feel a certain way when viewing a particular type of photograph. Or that is the explanation (crap) I came up with while pondering. The warmth left the picture and I just didn't like it. Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever abandoned an edit, a shot, a shoot, or an idea/project because of one quick feeling over color? I don't think it's a strange concept, just one I thought I would poll because it was on my mind.

The Next Break Is Over ..

So I am off for more learning and listening here in Atlantic City :-) Brrrrrr... COLD today here, and very windy!

IMG_E5203 (2).JPG

This shot of the bay behind Atlantic City NJ, doesn't bother me so much that the color is gone. It actually looks cold either way, because I am cold and the window I shot it through is a cold blue color. Again, my memories and emotions playing a role. hehe. The original shot here below.. Now I really must get back into the conference or I'll be in trouble.. haha.

Useless Facts About The Windmills In The Photo ..

Those large windmills in the background are 380 Feet Tall!! This is the FIRST wind farm ever built in the United States. It was constructed in 2006.

Located at our Wastewater Treatment Plant in Atlantic City, NJ, the Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm consists of five, 380-foot turbines capable of producing a combined 7.5 megawatts of power – enough energy to power approximately 2,500 homes! Source

About Me ~ The Artist

My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.

Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.

For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.

Sort:

I think the sunset picture does not lend itself very well to B&W conversion. Seeing the banding in the color image looks fine, in the black and white a bit flat yet over pronounced feel to it. Also the water highlights stand out much better int eh color image than the black and white.

The second picture, I feel lends itself quite well to being a B&W conversion. The blues in the color image seem washed out and not enough contrast to them, yet in the black and white the variations in the sky and the canal stand out more, and the reflection of the clouds in the canal seem more vibrant, not to mention the windmills stand out much more in the black and white one than in the color one, you almost overlook them in the color image.

Great comment! You very spot on here. I don't know if you use one, but I carry a red filter with my actual camera (not for my cell). It helps me get the feel for how the image will translate later. I especially use it with my film cameras.. not so much digital. The best are snow pictures, but right now.. no snow. It's been very unseasonable. Thank you thank you for the support always!!! Have a great weekend!

No filters yet other than a polarizer one on one lens. I am still very much a beginner in the photo hobby.

I've had a camera for I don't know how long.. and like you, I am very much a beginner as well. I Always need more practice.

Great shots with great colors my friend. We are also faced with severe winds over here and it is supposed to be summer. Moved here a year ago and still have to get uses to the conditions, but having fun in the meantime.
Happy painting!

That's right.. It's summer over there. Winds suck if your not used to them. It makes it hard to do anything out doors sometimes for sure. It's usually quite windy here where I live due to the lake behind my house. In the HOT summer I like it and in the winter I HATE it.. hehe.

Off to Paint!! Thanks for the nice comment!!

As people we are so choosy my friend. Then we like it and then we don't hahaha. A lake near you should deliver much calmness of soul if you allow it to.The winds here have lately increased to over 100 kph and ripping up trees and such. Just heard on the news about the damages in the city and glad that we live in the rural areas.
Blessings!

Wow.. That's CRAZY wind you have there. I can only imagine the damage that it would cause. To that, ours is more of a gentle breeze.

Oh yeah, all over the place my friend. 150 schools damaged, roofs ripped off and in the townships bedlam.
Luckily no one killed yet!
Blessings!

I have picked your post for my daily voting initiative! Keep it up and Steem on!

Thanks :-) Same to you!!
