'The Right Fishing Spot' - A 10 Minute Pencil Drawing

The Right Fishing Spot For Me ..

May not be the right spot for another fisherman. Some thought and logic should play a role in the spot you choose to fish from. So says this article I was reading on Fishing.com...

If you’re a novice with a fishing pole, you’ve likely sat out on the water twiddling your thumbs, drinking beer, dozing off and wondering when in the world you’d finally catch a bite. What you may not know is that your fishing technique is only part of the equation. The real trick is that the best fishing only happens when you find just the right spot. Source

So I have fallen on both sides of the coin when it comes to fishing. I've just picked a spot because of its closeness to the car. I've picked spots due to the amount of peace and quiet it boasted, and have also chosen spots because I really wanted to catch some fish. What ever it is that your trying to accomplish, the article covered it one way or another. This particular article contained basic 101 stuff, but I like to read it anyhow.

I Suppose The Point Of Me Bringing This Up ..

Is that while browsing the article, my eye was caught by one of the pictures within it. It was of a fisherman standing in the water at the reed grass line. He may have been taking cover behind the grass, as to blend in with it so he wouldn't be seen by the fish. The image appealed to me because it was of a fisherman, the scene was pretty and basic, and in a way it felt tranquil; I felt at peace when looking at it. Rather quickly I became attached to it and wanted to use it as my next inspiration for some sort of painting or drawing.

Today's 10 Minute Pencil Drawing ..

I decided on using this picture for today's inspiration. I would use it to reference during the drawing process, even though it was going to be very very short. I didn't like the fisherman facing to the left, so I edited the photo by flipping it. I also changed it to black and white so I could see the tonal values better. I then cut it down to size and clipped it to my sketch pad.

I Gathered What I Would Need ..

My sketch pad (roughly 5 inches x 7 inches), a 5B drawing pencil, an eraser, a print out of my inspiration, and about 10 minutes of time. Once I had all of these items together, I got right to work. I limited my time to about 10 minutes. I set my phone timer to make sure I didn't go overboard. I wanted to see what I could get done in the short amount of time. If I want, I'll play around with it a bit more later tonight or another time. For now, it is what it is ;-) .. a ten minute drawing of a fisherman.

IMG_5332.JPG

I start by outlining the general subject and the center of the picture, the fisherman. I work at getting his hat, coat and pants roughed in.

IMG_5333.JPG

IMG_5334.JPG

Next I turn my attention to the reed or blades of grass pushing up through the water's surface. I also start to blend in some of the graphite that I previously laid down. Since I am using a 5B (dark soft) pencil, blending is pretty easy and I just do it with my fingers. They get a bit messy, and I just keep a damp towel near by to wipe them on. Otherwise my finger prints get filled in with the graphite powder and become smooth. When that happens they no longer blend well.

IMG_5335.JPG

Now that the coat and hat are looking good, I turn my attention to the pants and applying shaded areas to the grass. I make sure when I draw the grass that I use a circle technique, where I appear to be drawing large circles with an open end. This works well for the grass effect. I also want to add in the bent and broken pieces of grass so the scene looks realistic and believable.

IMG_5336.JPG

Additional shading on the coat is applied, and I add the tassels or seed clusters to the top of only a few reeds. Similar to the reference photo, but not quite the same. I didn't like the cluster sitting right in front of his face, so I drew it in behind the man.

IMG_5338.JPG

Time was now ticking down to the last 45 seconds, so I worked on darkening up a few things on the fisherman's body as well as adding an extra reed, or blade of grass. I didn't talk about the water yet, because there's not much to say about it. The water is calm with only a few ripples, so that's all I added. Light shading and a few lines to give an impression of a surface.

TIMES UP!!

I utilized more like 12 minutes, but I subtracted time for taking progress photography. What would this post be without that?? Exactly! Boring :-/ Below is the finished piece, which I carefully and suitably named, 'The Right Fishing Spot'. You'll see it here with the reference photo clipped to my sketchpad. I'll just leave the drawing in there with the rest of my drawings, until I decide I want to do something with it.

IMG_5341.JPG

I lightly cropped the final drawing in order to clean things up a little.

An example of it framed .. I like to do that from time to time. Otherwise I don't know if it would be right to frame a 10 minute drawing. I suppose there is no code to what can or can not be framed.

My Inspiration ..

I just wanted to give another shout out to my inspiration. This is the original photo I utilized from the source listed below, fishing.com. Like I mentioned earlier, I flipped and edited the picture to suit my needs and wants. Take a look at the site if your interested in fishing. There's more on there than basic fishing 101 stuff. If anything, I always run across some good inspiration material for future work.. when I am in a fishing kind of mood that is :-)

About Me ~ The Artist

My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.

Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.

For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.

Thanks to my PHC family!! 🙃

I love it! My great grandfather was a ship's captain on Long Island Sound and so, all things fishing were what I teethed on.

A wonderful rendition and I am so glad you are taking the time to post these again! Thank you!

I'm loving the step by step, especially for us mere mortals that know nothing of art. We just appreciate it from afar.

Oh, I just remembered you asked about some art on my wall. I bought two of them at a small art auction for very little and the other one I found online and looked like it would match nicely. It did and so I married them up. I like art and have different kinds all around the house.

Thanks again!

Thank you for the support and of course the tip! A fisherman on the sound? Neat. Also a hard life. I much rather it a hobby than a living. It’s a quick drawing, so not too good but fun non the less. I was surprised and truly grateful to see all the support given. What makes me more happy is that you had a good memory come to you after seeing the drawing. 😌 thinking maybe a pencil drawing of a particular lighthouse is what I should create next. 😉

It’s nice to have art on the walls. It speaks to your open mind and kind spirit. If I had to guess, I wouldn’t have guessed they were purchased separately. They definitely belong together.
