Is Facebook good for the world?

Today I was surprised when I logged in to Facebook to see a question/survey asked to me by Facebook themselves that I found very interesting. I was given five answers to choose from.

Please Agree or Disagree to the following statement:

Facebook is good for the world.

  • Strongly agree

  • Agree

  • Neither agree nor disagree

  • Disagree

  • Strongly disagree

I took a screenshot and then immediately clicked the X on the top right of the question box. I am not feeding the data pool anymore that I already have to by being a user.

Why am I still on Facebook?

The reason that I stay on Facebook, despite the fact that I know it's bad, is to stay connected with my friends. I feel would lose a lot of connections with my friends if I left Facebook. People invite me to there events through it, send me messages, and tag me when they are thinking about me. I wanted to stayed connected and I don't feel like I have ways to reclaim my friends separate from Facebook.

There really is no solution I have for the ending of this post to these problems. I just found it interesting that Facebook wanted to figure out what percentage of the world still thinks there existence is good.

At least I have Steemit, which is my safe haven away from the craziness of Facebook. Hopefully steemit won't start becoming like Facebook or the other social media data miners once it starts growing more.

I only have my facebook account so I could create a page with my woodburning.
That's the only way I use it. And sometimes to promote my steemit post :)

I completely understand! I have two facebook pages that I have too, I don't keep up with them that well though :p I used to promote my steemit post more often but I haven't lately for some reason :p

The fact they're so up front about asking it means they're aware it's become a negative space for lots of people. I'm guessing the huge amount of data they have (such as average log in sessions and type of interactions) is showing a large group of people either being put off completely or if they still use it a lot, not having a good time while doing so.
I have been using facebook less and less for the last year as I do believe it has grown into something that actually makes many people feel worse the longer they are on it.
It still has use for contacting people or arranging events, but there is now so much negativity on there that seems to be reinforced by design.

Edit: great first picture by the way, there are some people for whom it literally is like a drug they can't get away from, constantly scrolling the wall.

Right! I was very shocked with how straightforward the question was. Yeah for sure, they have plenty of data to monitor people. They actually can know a person very well just based on what the person "likes".

The biggest problem is how facebook treats its user....like property. Eliciting permission to do things that break privacy boundaries just by user agreement changes each year. Tech companies are all starting to follow there model of business and it is a complete invasion.

The usefulness if what keeps people using it but the privacy sacrifice is a great cost to pay.....more than even a monthly paid subscription.

Thanks, I found it on the search engine. I think it even has the screen name of the person who made it.

Yes definitely. I just think of how many data points they have for heavy users, log in session length, when they log in, what they like, even what they feel like at certain times, how much time they spend reading certain things, what they click on.
It's too much for something that used to be something used primarily for keeping in touch with your friends. Not that they shouldn't grow and progress of course, but the focus seems to be more on what they can use for advertising purposes.

Yeah, but not just heavy users.... all users. A lot can be predicted based off of wat someone "likes".

Yes, the sacrifice is great just to be able to keep up with friends. They should be able to grow without the sacrifice of privacy yet data mining is the money making business these days!

Hey there, I totally understand the way you are thinking, and I was thinking the same way for a really long time.

This is not about convincing anybody to delete it's account, but I just wanted to mention my story and to give a reason for why I deleted my facebook account. Maybe you are interested in it...

I am actually a person who likes to think in a free way. Freedom of speech is very important for me. When I noticed facebook posts dissapearing because of critical thoughts I started to get angry about the platform. The peak for me was the moment, when whole accounts were banned for ridiculous reasons and even institutions were founded to censor what they call hate-speech.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think, that hate-speech is good as I am a peaceful person, but I think it's the wrong way to solve the problem by censoring and prohibiting to write about it.

Also the whole aspect of data facebook is collecting is frightening. Governments do have access to this data via interfaces etc. For me facebook became something much more frightening than the German Stasi

On one side we often talk about things that are bad but don't do anything against it.As this things are only possible because we support it, the only solution I saw was to delete my account to set a sign...

Cheers!

Cool, glad you understand.

Yeah, It is good to get away from facebook. An alternative that can completly replace it would be the best.... same functionality minus the privacy invasion.

I am the same way, I believe in freedom! Yes, facebook is big on censorship. It constantly censors the video "all wars are banker wars". Yeah facebook pages deactivate also.

I am not misunderstanding you. I completely hear what you are saying. aggressors of the truth will always use Orwellian terms to hide there true actions.

Yeah, facebook and google are huge data collectors. Googles even worse because they know how to organize it and index it very well.

Yeah, it is because most people don't know how to make changes in the world....including me. U?sually all the biggest changes and movements that have been made in the world have always been only about 3-5% of the people making those changes. Good, that is a very good proactive response.

Cheers!

I have used FB for a long time. ALL in all I have benefited greatly from it so in that sense I feel its good for the world. Though as we know the principles for which it stands and the results of its existence are far from all good.
I have only used it to promote my Steemit posts for over a year and answer direct messages.
Activism at its finest~*~

Yeah me too, since 2007. I guess I have benefited too. If they just didn't increase breach the privacy of their users each year, it would be so much better. I think that is the reason why they are doing it though. It is a useful tool and they know that the majority of people have become dependent on it, like me.

Good for you for using and seeing it in the positive way. Since I don't plan on leaving FB anytime soon, I will start seeing the positive too.

Yes, if your going to be a part of something find a way to not only benefit you but the CAUSE!

Keep pouring the energy investment into Steemit as fb and the others are taking significant advantage of their users. They should have been compensating ppl for many a year now.

You're a poet brother, drop some recent magic. Inspiration is a key ingredient in the evolution of life. I'm starting my SteemIt with poetry and I will branch out from there (and there are some inspiring beings in this sphere)

We are Rennaisance Beings. Something about the magic of creativity that illuminates depths of truth, experience, and growth.

One Love

Oh, and a picture says a thousand words, so then...what does a picture with words convey....probably that she'd be on Steemit and not fb...

Yeah, I want to support attention economies that support the users (like steemit) as much as possible.

Thanks, I started steemit making poetry of my song lyrics that I have wrote. I shall share the things I create as much as possible.

lol I like the picture with words. It conveys a lot more than 1000 words :p
