Bahasa Malaysia & Indonesia- > Same-same but different (2)

Continuing from last week topic <Same-same but different in Bahasa Malaysia & Indonesia> , I hope to share somemore the interesting difference between these two brothers languages:

1) (MY) Encik Cik vs (IN) Bapak Ibu --> English: Mr & Mrs/Miss

When I travelled to Indonesia, I always like to engage a driver to fetch us to go wherever tourist spots that we did homework and interested, So when the driver fetched us from airport to hotel, then he wanted to ask tomorrow what time should we meet and depart for travel.

So he asked :”Pukul brapa bapak dan ibu mahu bertolak?”(EN:What time sir and mdm would like to depart) , at first I stunned and wondered why he assumed my parents travel together with us? Then after 3.3sec I stunned , then I remember I once read Indonesian travel guide, their way of addressing is different from Malaysia. From that moment, I called everybody bapak and ibu during my stay in Indonesia.

Though I myself find it interesting to call so many strangers “father” & “mother”
(In Malaysia , Bapa and Ibu refers to Father & Mother)

2) (MY) Bilik vs (IN) Kamar --> English: Room

When hotel receptionist knew that we from Malaysia, they like to converse to us in Bahasa, felt some sense of abang adik and more ramah mesra. So when they handed me the room key, they spoke “Kamar XXX” , I immediately sweat.. “Karma??” What is has to do with karma when I stay in this hotel??

Stun 3.3sec , my brain circuit linked, ohh it meant the “Room”.

Took the key went up to the room, but found it’s rather small, so I went back to receptionist asking if can do a room change as room is small. So I said “Kamar kecil” (EN: Room is small) , Receptionist replied me “Ada, sana bapak” (EN: Have, Over there, sir )

“???” “???” “Sana? Mana??” (EN: There? Where?)

Ohh, Kamar kecil means toilet in Indonesian…

3) (MY) Tandas vs (IN) WC --> English: Toilet

I first learnt the Indonesian called the toilet WC through my work place Indonesian operators. But as I mentioned in my first post Auleo: Bahasa Malaysia & Indonesia- > Same-same but different (1): Wisatawan, Bandara & BBM, Indonesian pronounced the ABCD in Dutch pronunciation way “Ah-Bay-Say-Day” , So WC become “Wu-A-Say” and when they speak fast, it becomes “Where-Say” .

I originally thought “Where-Say” equals toilet, but didn’t know it’s the simple 2 alphabets “WC”. When found out also very curious why WC ? Google and only found out it’s “Water Closet”
