The meaning of HODL
No it is not a typo - lots of people prefer writing it this way. But why?
It does mean HOLD doesn't it?
Well yes it does. Many people have now incorporated HODL as just another way to say HOLD on many forums, including steemit.
In the past, if you saw the word written as HODL everyone would have thought it as another spelling error, but ever since 2013 it became a thing to say or rather write, when the financial markets went down and keeping your positions. i.e not selling. The reason for this is found in the post of a likely frustrated but at least equally funny guy venting on Bitcointalk about his life and more specifically the markets going down again.
I usually refrain from copying and pasting large amounts of text but in this case I'll make an exception as it is just so funny.
Here goes:

I'm not part of that group. When the traders buy back in I'm already part of the market capital so GUESS WHO YOU'RE CHEATING day traders NOT ME~! Those taunt threads saying "OHH YOU SHOULD HAVE SOLD" YEAH NO SHIT. NO SHIT I SHOULD HAVE SOLD. I SHOULD HAVE SOLD MOMENTS BEFORE EVERY SELL AND BOUGHT MOMENTS BEFORE EVERY BUY BUT YOU KNOW WHAT NOT EVERYBODY IS AS COOL AS YOU. You only sell in a bear market if you are a good day trader or an illusioned noob. The people inbetween hold. In a zero-sum game such as this, traders can only take your money if you sell.
