Term: Cobra
Definition: A post World War II
modernist movement of artists and writers whose name is derived from the three native cities of the participants: Copenhagen, Belgium and Amsterdam. Members included Guillaume Corneille, Carl Henning Pedersen, Pierre Alechinsky and Karel Appel. The group was part of the post World War II western movement of rebelling against censorship and control of art expression during the Nazi-Germany era. Focusing on color, form and nature, they urged freedom and vitality in their painting. They exhibited together from 1948 to 1951, and, showing influences of primitive art, tended to use violent-appearing brushwork and saturated color.
