An odd girl, but I sure feel my heart swell when she is around. Sometimes I have the feeling she expects too much of me, the other girls too, but when I’m thinking clearly, I know that her expectations, whether conscious or subconscious, help drive me so that I become a better person. I hadn’t thought of it before, but it must be terrible, and insulting, to have someone as your partner who has few expectations of you.

In the morning, as I was finishing my breakfast, Meli entered through the garden door. I have decided to write of her and what she brought me at the end of this diary - as I will soon be starting the second diary.
Not long before having to leave, we had a visitor. It was Stella. I was puzzled as to what could have brought her without her husband and children. As is usual, she first had to ask after everyone and I sensed that this time she actually feared bringing up the subject that was on her mind.
“Stella I can sense that something is worrying you, but I will not go into your mind to find out what it is. I have to leave for the airport, so I think it is better you tell us straight out. If you need to speak to me alone the girls can leave us. Or the other way around.”
“It is about my husband. He refuses to talk to you about it.”
“But you feel he should. Tell me and if I think he is right, it will be as if you never told me.” I was convinced the subject was one of sex.
“Since you returned Tasso to me, we are struggling. Most of the jobs he gets offered, as a detective, he refuses to do. He says that he feels when his customer is trying to get information to hurt somebody else and he will not do it. This dancing we do, it has made him kinder, but if he does not work we will starve. I told him to find another kind of job but he refuses, he has only worked as a detective and knows nothing else.”
I was relieved that it was not the problem I had expected. “You were right to talk to me, Stella. It is very foolish to keep something like this to yourselves.”
I sat thinking about it. My first reaction had been to ask Alki to help. I decided it would not be fair. He is not my father, despite our love. I had to find something real, not something as an excuse to pay him a salary, he is a proud man and would refuse it. “Stella, you have made me very happy with this news. I have wanted to ask Tasso to help me on something, but felt it would not be fair to keep taking him away from his work.” I gave her a worried look. “Do you think he would feel bad about working with me?”
She lit up. “He would be happy to work for you, he feels…”
“No. He would not work for me, he would be working with me. I will be paying him a salary so the distinction may sound silly, but it is necessary. The job he would do, he must do it because he wants to, because he sees the good in it. As we grow in numbers he will find he has more work to do and may even need to employ people - they would have to be chosen from among us.”
“What are you thinking of Roberto?” Dommi had been listening and could not work out what it was I wanted.

“I think we have to get him to train every single person who has joined us including his own family. From small children to the oldest. If or when the world gets to know about us, we may need to hide. We may find ourselves being attacked. It would not be right that only our circle has had training on self-defence. Everyone must acquire instantaneous reactions to every kind of threat Tasso can imagine. I’ll be happy for him to take lessons if he feels it will help make him more efficient at finding ways to make all of us be safer. Once our training is over, he must hold refresher courses on a regular basis, especially if and whenever we are opened to new useful gifts. Records must be kept so that we know if anyone is avoiding the training - and I am including myself.
In addition to the training, every single one of us will need, apart from our real documents, a set of false birth certificates, drivers licence and passports and so on. Perhaps the children and babies must also have documents as adults so that they do not have to move as families - where those attacking us know we have two babies, for instance, having to travel with two babies makes it easier for them to identify us, even if we change the way we look.”
I could feel my enthusiasm for my idea take hold in my loves and grow stronger in me. “We have now reached the stage that we are finding new people more often, but more urgent is our need to provide all this for our children. Stella, I expect a number of them to be born over the next few years. With babies able to change their ages, act and talk like adults, I would not be surprised to find some of them having babies also. I’m sorry that shocked you Stella. Think of Agapi. How do you prevent her if she sets her mind on it? She can appear as a young mature woman whenever she wants. It would be easy for her to trick your husband or sons and get herself pregnant. Do not try to impose on her your wishes - rather, help her understand why she must wait.
There will be times Tasso might not be busy, but I think the way we are growing, it is more likely he will find he has more work than he can handle. Do you think he would enjoy the work?”
“He will be very proud that you chose him.”
I laughed and if she had not been able to sense me she might have been insulted. “A thought just crossed my mind. If we have to start thinking of ourselves as a nation, then we are the only one that will have a General without an army. He will also have to be our Intelligence Officer, making contacts and having his fingers within Government departments so as to be able to get us all the documents he needs and maybe, should they find out about us, give us advance warning so that we can escape. Ask him to suggest the size of a fund he’ll need to keep himself a small group of informers.”
Stella laughed happily. “My husband a General, that will make him laugh Roberto. He always says he was not a good soldier.”
“For us I think he will be.”

In the beginning, Robert only thought of those being "opened" by Cherine as being a small group, but with the children he and Alki have had, plus the new ones from the birthday of Cherine, he has realised they are growing in numbers and will keep growing,
As the Protector, he worries about how he can keep them safe and if the world learns about them, how can they disappear.
