Willpower. The SKILL.
We all want it. Not all of us “have it.”
FOR NOW.
It’s so easy to beat ourselves up when our willpower “fails us.” It’s common to think that it’s because of personal weakness that we’re not able to resist temptation, even when it takes us away from the pursuit of our most important and valued goals.
What’s really important to understand here is that WILLPOWER IS A SKILL.
The belief that you either have it or you don’t is just not true. I don’t believe it’s an inherent strength, this ability you were lucky enough to be born with, or the talent you unfortunately lack.
Personality does play a part in this, sure - but I believe it only dictates the ease of learning rather than the natural presence or absence of the skill.
Just like tying your shoes, braiding your hair, or writing in cursive - you’re not born knowing how to do these things, but rather you learn. Trial and error is huge here, and finding the cues and techniques that make it easiest for you to progress toward mastery.
Would you tell a child that’s learning to tie their shoes that they’re weak because they weren’t able to yet? Actually, don’t answer that - I don’t want to open up a debate on parenting here. I’ll just tell you that I personally wouldn’t!
Some people catch on faster than others, I can agree with that… But everyone can arrive at a place of proficiency with practice and dedication.
Learning to strengthen your willpower requires hard work and strategies, like anything else. It takes time and effort, and it can be exasperating, but if you keep at it then it absolutely can be done.
Just like a muscle, the more you exercise your willpower it the stronger it gets. For example, when you first start working out, lifting light weights might be pretty darn tough for you. But you keep lifting those same weights, and you start to adapt - before you know it, those weights are super easy for you and you’ve graduated to bigger dumbbells and more advanced lifts.
The same goes for willpower - at first, resisting even the smallest temptation might be really hard, but the more times you practice making those same good choices, the easier they will become. And then, getting over those little everyday hurdles will seem so easy that you don’t even notice them anymore.
The enviable people with bulletproof willpower have developed their personal strategies well and are so accustomed to making the choices that are right for them that it has become second nature, and that’s what we’re going for!
Everyone’s strategies are different, and what is difficult to one person may be easy for another - these are important things to keep in mind when you’re finding your own way to having that strong willpower you desire. Because of these factors, comparing yourself to others isn’t always helpful - rather, borrow strategies from people that you respect and implement them in your own life to see if they’re a good fit for you.
If they are, awesome! Keep those little tips and tricks in your figurative toolbox - the more you have, the better equipped you’ll be to handle challenges.
If they’re not, no worries! Everyone is unique and needs different things, so scrap that idea and try another :) The strategies that work for you don’t make you better or worse than anyone else!
The important take away here is to just KEEP TRYING. I say the same thing to my clients all the time about their fitness. When times get tough, and you get super frustrated, it’s natural to want to quit. But just like in the gym, giving up doesn’t get you anywhere except farther away from your goals. And they’re goals you’ve chosen for a reason, right?
So give yourself some love, some gentle understanding, and if you fall, jump right on back up and keep swinging. Perseverance is the key to lasting change.
Today is a great time to start fortifying our willpower and accumulating helpful skills - what works best for you? :)
Please feel free to share your experiences and techniques - I think it’s a great opportunity for us to help each other!
I’d love a comment, upvote, or resteem if you enjoyed this :)
Thank you all for reading, and for your continued love, warmth, and support!
I do think motivation is a huge part of willpower.
I'm sure as a trainer you've seen time and time again, people able to avoid terrible foods or stay on their exercise routine when they have a competition or wedding or whatever coming up.
I'm normally pretty disciplined, but I definitely go in waves - I'm not as disciplined or have as much willpower as I'd like all the time, but I completely agree with a lot of the comments about having a strong routine. It absolutely definitely helps.
Hey @aussieninja if I can share with you a tip🙂
As annemariemay suggested you can strengthen your "why".
We all have the waves of up and down. However if you can write down the reasons "Why" you're engaging in a specific activity can help.
The reasons should also be something that's external. When we do something for ourselves it's easy to give up. However if we do something for our spouse our child a friend, it gives us that extra power to persevere.
For me consistency is key.
If you continue with your activity for least 90 days it becomes a habit.
I hope this advice helps you 🙂
LOVE this, @gflfitness! Fantastic!
Ps. Thank you for the resteem!!!!!! :D xoxo!
Totally. Having a strong "why" and thinking about it often definitely helps people to stay the course! And I agree, I think we all experience those waves from time to time - I know I do! :)
A strong "Why" is the key!
Sage words,
I jut learnt something from this line today.
Yay! I am glad that this helped! :)
You can definitely train to strengthen your willpower BUT a human's willpower will always be a little bit "weak". If you try to eliminate the things that may cause your willpower to "fail you", that's a great plan!
I.e. if you are on a diet; don't buy or have candy at your home! Even the people with the strongest willpower will break sometimes. "Just a one piece of chocolate"... One chocolate bar later: "F*ck :D"
haha! Such a good point! It does make it much easier if the things that will fail you on a diet aren't in the house! It would be soooo hard to be locked in a room with hundreds of treats and only eat kale...
Taking steps to set yourself up for success is always smart! :)
I love to do exercise, I exercise myself, so those who exercise are very much love them
That's great! It's always awesome to connect with a kindred spirit :) thanks for the kind comment!
good post and useful miss @annemariemay
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it @herryazmi! :)
The thing to help me with willpower is a strong morning routine. I think that the nest way to build will power is to start first thing when you wake up doing something that requires pushing yourself - I start the day with breathing exercises Wim Hoff style
Nice - I love that idea! Starting off strong :) and Wim Hof is a fascinating person - I heard about him via Tim Ferriss, and then my coach mentioned his exercises too... So cool! :)
Wow, wow, wow, slow down! Who's Wim Hoff? He sounds interesting :D! I'll have to look into what he's doing!
Wim Hoff is a very interesting Dutch athlete , just type wim hoff breathing it will get you started
THE ICE MAN!!! Yeah @cryptoteen, I bet you'll find him quite unusual and neat :) great suggestion @eugenekul!
Totally appreciate the notion of will power in this context. It's right up there with free will and so many don't have it, or get it. I remember hearing that in dealing with something difficult , all you do is change the way you think about it. I'm not big on doughnuts, so it's easy for me to see a lot of gluten and different levels of sugars, lol.
Hahaha! If only everyone could see donuts the way you do - my job would sure be a lot easier! ;) Very interesting points, and thanks so much for your support and comment!

You are absolutely right! Will power is a skill we learn.
Many people struggle with it.. I do, I just love Peanut butter sandwiches on the weekend 🙄
However I keep fighting to get back into rhythm.
As you have wisely suggested if you fall of the wagon you don't waste time on the ground. You pick yourself up and start over again.
In time one will master the skill!
Thanks for your post @annemariemay 💪🏿
