Keeping fish at home is really fun, but these little fish are driving me crazy with their stupidity.
We’ve had the fish for almost a month now, and a few have died one after another.
But let me tell you how they died—it really doesn’t seem to have much to do with their environment.
The first way they died was "jailbreaking"—a suicidal escape. Three Mickey fish died from jumping out of the tank through the rain-style water outlet of the filter. In the first three days after they were put in the tank, one Mickey fish would jump out every day when no one was home during the day. By the time we got back from work or the elders came home in the afternoon, they’d already be lying motionless on the tiles. Sometimes they’d jump into a hidden spot, and with Wuhan’s high temperatures, by the time we found them at night, they’d dried up into little fish jerky. Later, we wised up and covered that side with a small lid, and no more fish died from escaping after that. Some people say fish jump out of tanks because of a lack of oxygen, but that can’t be the case here. We have three water plants in the tank that are growing like crazy—two of them have even been pruned twice, they’re so lush they’re almost taking over the whole tank. Every leaf is covered in tiny oxygen bubbles, so there’s no way the tank is short on oxygen.
The second way was getting crushed in the gap of the feeding ring. Two fish died after getting stuck in the space between the feeding ring and the tank wall. We installed two feeding rings—clear acrylic ones with suction cups to stick to the tank wall. You drop food in from the top, and it floats on the surface for a while before slowly sinking to the lower part of the ring, which stops the food from floating all over the tank. It’s a handy little gadget, but it has a flaw: the suction cups leave a roughly 5mm gap between the back of the ring and the tank wall. And these little fish are so dumb—when they’re eating, instead of going in through the front, they insist on squeezing through that gap at the back. We often find small fish stuck in that 5mm space. If we catch it in time, we can rescue them, but sometimes a bigger, plumper fish gets stuck and isn’t found in time. After being trapped all day, it dies. That’s how two fish met their end.
The third death was even funnier. We use three plant rings to hold the water plants in place. One fish, for some reason—maybe it smelled food, or maybe some food drifted under the ring—kept trying to squeeze into the plant ring. By the time I found it, half its body was stuck inside the ring, the other half (including its tail) hanging out. It was trapped—couldn’t get in or out—and died just like that.
Then, just yesterday, we added another feeding spot on the other side of the tank. The original one was so crowded during feeding time, so we put two, one on each side, to spread them out.
Yesterday, my son and I fed them at both rings at the same time.
Most of the fish were smart—they picked one ring and started eating right away.
But there was this one big zebra fish that was so stupid, it had my son and me in stitches.
It swam back and forth between the two rings: when it got close to the left one, it saw it was crowded, so it turned around and swam to the right. Then it saw the right one was crowded too, so it swam back to the left.
It did this back-and-forth dance a dozen or twenty times, and didn’t get a single bite to eat.
This little guy must have choice anxiety! My son and I were laughing our heads off watching it from outside the tank—these fish are really going to be the death of me!
