Quantum Computing - What Does it mean for Crypto?

in #steemleo7 years ago (edited)

I'm sure everyone has heard about it by now. Google's quantum computer has just recently achieved quantum supremacy.(Ability of quantum computing technologies to solve problems regular computers can't.)

The quantum computer in question, solved a problem that would have taken the World's most powerful supercomputer 10 000 years in 200 seconds.

The prediction, is that this will basically render cryptos obsolete. We're not there yet but this might just be the first step, so says the article.

It's not the first time I hear of this fear. When I first researching cryptos/blockchains, of course I kept seeing the chorus(immutable, censorhip resistant, unhackable, etc).

However, any unbiased source I'd consume from, would bring up how once quantum computers would be out, they would potentially crack the cryptograhy behind blockchains no problemo, potentially making bank for their owners in the process. Alleged, such a breakthrough was still a decade or more away from happen.

But we're almost there now, it seems, I hope not.

I became aware of this breakthrough yesterday, but had just as quickly put it on the back burner. That was until I saw someone mention it on taskmaster4450's post a few hours ago.

I meditated on that small conversation and now I can't stop thinking about it.

Which is why I wanted to get the opinions of people already invested in this space.

Do you think it will soon be advanced enough to challenge blockchains, or not? Do you think it's curtains for hodlers, or that it's all just FUD?

If Google's claims turn out to be genuine, which industry will reach mass adoption first?

Cryptos, or quantum computers?

Sadly, on this one my money is on quantum. Everybody already knows what a computer is, what it does, everybody loves an upgrade. Most no matter the price.

Anyways;

PEACE!!

Neat thoughts shared on #pypt

Quantum computing is something that seems on the horizon and will hit us hard and fast. I am scared and excited for its possibilities in the hands of humans. Hopefully the decentralized nature of the blockchain will leverage that tech for the greater good.

Great post!

Indeed all we can do is hope, btw is there some sort of quantum encryption that could be added on top blockchain codes. Just spit ballin here. lol

Cheers for passing by.
