Food in tourist places. Our sad story and my simple rules.

in #food7 years ago

The less you know the better you sleep. But for some reason I want to know a lot. Therefore, I am always afraid to eat street food and prefer home cooking. However, what to do when you are a tourist in a new city and the trip is so spontaneous that you did not have time to look at ratings of local cafes?

In the most popular cityparts restaurants and cafes rely on mass character and speed, and not on quality and reputation.

Plus, inflated prices, which is also not particularly pleasant. (In Rome in the citycenter coffee costs 15 euros, on the outskirts the price is 3 euros). Therefore, it is always interesting for me to get into less popular areas and find a cozy café for local residents there.

My rule number 1: look for a cafe with homemade food away from the center.

What if the tourist area takes half the city as in Toledo or on the street it's cold, it's raining and suddenly you want to eat?

Maybe it's only my karma, but always in tourist places I get food on a cracked plate, or tablecloth is dirty or dish is tasteless.
But the strangest thing is when the restaurant is very nice, and there is no soap in the toilet, or a dirty floor, or paper is long over. I'm even scared to think what's going on in a kitchen ...

Exactly this cafe in Toledo was overcrowded but in the next one there were nobody. We had an instinct of mass consciousness and chose a more popular one. One waiter served all 10 tables, so we had a lot of time to look throw all index meals )

I ordered two dishes and couldnt eat one of them. I wanted fresh asparagus, I got canned one with an unpleasant taste.
Therefore,

My rule 2: order what you have already eaten or you know what this dish looks like.

My friend ordered two kinds of meat. The whole next day he was lying in bed because of intoxication.

My rule number 3. Very strange, but it clearly helps not to spoil the impression of a restaurant. Check the toilets for soap, paper and cleanliness.

A good owner should monitor sanitation not only in the general hall in order to attract clients.

Well, now who considers me insane, feel free to write your honest opinion. That is what half of my friends think)))

Sort:

You are not insane, you are just cautious. I had a bad food poison around 4 years ago from eating in a strange place and I would not repeat that ever. It took me about one week to get back to normal and nobody wants to know what I've been through :D
