UPVOTE BOTS - Your Discretion To Use
Upvote bots are accounts backed by programming scripts which automatically votes on your post when you send sbd or steem with your post link as memo. Recently most require only sbd and the votes are done in rounds, this is to ensure the voting power gets back to 100%.

Bids
During a bidding round, sbd are sent in from various accounts, making yo obtain a fraction of the upvot. Assuming Jerry and Ama send in a bid of 1 SBD each during a bidding round and they alone are participants, that means they get 50% upvote each at the end of that round.
If King joined in the bidding with 2 SBD, that means that the total sbd sent is 4 SBD hence giving king a 50% upvote and Ama and Jerry with 25% upvote during the round. If King had sent 8 SBD bringing the total pool to 10, he would have swooped 80% up upvote, leaving Jerry and Ama with 10% upvote each.
What Is The Senario Today?
At first, very few people knew about voting bots and one could anticipate and monitor to find out when the bids are less and make good return. 1 SBD could get a $2 to even $4 upvote but now, it is not so.
You may not even get an upvote equivalent to what you.
Why, Did The System Fail?
The bot system is great. It provide the necessary visibility to post when you believe your post is worth it and enable it catch the eyes of people.
I see people always complaining in voting bot replies that they sent X sbd and received Y sbd and are not happy because it is less than what they paid for.
1. Lack Of a Knowledge
Find out how much steem power and potential value of upvote at 100%. How many people have made a bid and total SBD sent in for a round. And how much time is left for round to end.
2. People are Greedy
People think sending in large amounts give large upvotes. I'm sending 10 SBD to a bot whose upvote at 100% is $8 and you would be competing with others for it.....
3. Tools To Use
You can use this great tool by @yabapmatt, a steemit witness, to make back at least what we invest

The world is continually evolving and new things come up
What's the next upgrade
I think a system adopted by some can help.....
Set large bids aside and let them compete for that round
Also a threshold at the value of bot can be set and ensure at least, you get what you put in (actually you lose 25% in curation reward)
Resteem your post to 2000+ followers for only 0.5 SBD or Steem)
Just send 0.5 SBD or steem to @steemvote (URL as memo)
New Followers get 0.001 SBD$ and an upvote for free!!
Just follow @steemvote and...

I'm upvoting this despite my disagreement with the use of vote buying bots. What I will say though is that something very similar could be great for steem if the stake holders here were to recognise the real value of having payouts determined by real engaged people rather than arbitrarily or by programmed bots.
Here's what I would love to see and users of these vote buying bots could still benefit if we completely lose them.
I'd like to see steemit inc @ned @sneak (and any others who have them enabled) disable notifications for transactions to the wallets.
Then I would like to see an app or feature developed (doesn't have to be steemit) that notifies users of transfers to their wallets when the amount is above an amount specified by the receiver.
I could set my minimum to $1 so that I only receive notification of transfers when they are above $1. I would not set up automation as I believe when people receive automated support they sometimes slack off which was something I noticed demotivated me back when I was supported by the steem guild. This $1 would be paying for my ATTENTION. And this is what whales could sell instead.
I would advise setting the minimum higher if they can't read the amount of links they receive and to not withhold their votes only for people willing to pay if they want the userbase to continue to grow. The requirement to compete with vote buyers or attention buyers will completely turn off new users and old.

Congratulations! This post has been upvoted from the communal account, @minnowsupport, by anaman from the Minnow Support Project. It's a witness project run by aggroed, ausbitbank, teamsteem, theprophet0, someguy123, neoxian, followbtcnews/crimsonclad, and netuoso. The goal is to help Steemit grow by supporting Minnows and creating a social network. Please find us in the Peace, Abundance, and Liberty Network (PALnet) Discord Channel. It's a completely public and open space to all members of the Steemit community who voluntarily choose to be there.

Welcome bro, thanks for the love
This not only identifies problems with bots, but also supplies tools and information to help others in making decisions. Good job @anaman. You are a great asset to our community.
This post is now part of the Duty Hut Library.
On behalf of the SteemIt community, many thanks. @sgt-dan (aka sargento).
I salute sir.
The great tool you linked is by @yabapmatt, just to link his account here for some credit. A lot of folks don't realize he's a member and a witness so here's a shoutout to him for some good work.
I guess I have to edit my witness vote list. Cos some are on because I wanted to fill my 30 slots, I used to have only 5/6 up there.
Thanks for the info, that tool actually showed me the light
Don't just blindly vote. We all publish witness updates. Read them and then select the 30 you feel the most strongly about rather than arbitrarily picking.
Ok, wow.. I think I used to read some when I join discord but haven't been monitoring anymore.
I would work on that. Thanks
