11 years searching for a perfect superhero - about MCU.
Soon in cinemas appears another part of Avengers and I realized that I have never put in my mind all MCU films from the least favorite to the one who I likes the most. And all in all, why not do it. For my own pleasure.
Before the sandstorm starts here and the various parts of the body start to ache from the facepalm, through clenched teeth to the seats we have to fix a few things. First of all - this list is nowhere to be used for any scientific, film-related, cartoonistic, super-heroes (beautiful new word) objectivity. It's a pleasure-making juxtaposition in which I took into account different things - what I expected after the movie, how I played with it, but also how it stood the test of time. In some cases - the emotions may be a bit more chilled because the movie had the premiere of the former, in others the hotter because the film appeared on the screens recently. In addition, there are also quite personal likes and dislikes, some elements going beyond the story - in general, this entire conglomerate of experiences, which makes us like some things more than others.
This is not a list of MCU movies from the worst to the best. This is a list of MCU movies from those that I like the least to those I like the most. Yours may be different and there is nothing wrong with that. This is not at any time an assessment that I would like to impose on everyone. At the same time - the truth is that in each of these films there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages - many of them lose when compared with others or gain - the success of some is possible only because they were created after or against others. Arranging cultural products in any order is difficult, and somewhat misses the idea of the work as such (after all, the work does not exist in order to compete with another work but to tell their story) but gives you permission because we do not hide - they are works for a bit smaller "c” in addition, everyone does it, so why not join in the fun. Because it is fun. And as such, this list should be treated.
Capitan America: The First Avenger - I do not like this movie. Despite the charming smile of Chris Evans, despite Peggy Carter, despite this retro style - I do not like. Why? First of all, it bothers me a bit that although the film on the one hand distances itself from war propaganda on the other - it lands dangerously close to the propaganda story. The second thing is those unfortunate film Nazis (actually hydras) - I always have a problem with them because they are scary but in fact all their film actions in films such as Indiana Jones or Captain America change something real and really dangerous in such a comic narrative cartoon. I have a problem with this although I understand how this trail works. At the end I have a problem with how the first Captain America is in fact a trailer for the next movies - it introduces what it has to introduce so that they can shoot the Avengers but as a movie, in my opinion, but defend myself weakly. I think it was the first time when sitting on the film based on the Marvel comic I had the impression that it was the most expensive trailer that was made.
Thor: The Dark Word - the second part of Thor is so low on the list mainly because I try to keep up appearances, the appearance of objectivity. Objectively, this is a weak film - no one is so bad and so absent that you can actually forget that he is in the movie at all. The underground from central London commutes to Greenwich after three stops. But at the same time, I can not help it, it's a movie that I like. I like the very emotional and witty beginning of the movie - where we have Loki and Thor. I like these three minutes when I thought that Loki was dead and that it would really be something that was slicing for this character. I like the Thor who still has a lot of charm. And at the same time - this is an example that Marvel can make such films where all heroes are quite nice and cool and good looking but nothing is able to sketch out an interesting and engaging conflict. Personally, I have the impression that in Thor 2, all these dark elves were the least needed and could be replaced - in total, anything. No less I maintain the opinion that the second Thor is not a bad movie as some claim but it wasn't necessary.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - I have no doubt that this is a movie that from the production of Marvel not only disappointed me the most but also the least amused. It is such a production that necessarily wants to break through the first part, so everything must be more in it - more funny scenes, more colors, more references to pop culture. Viewers are supposed to curl up with laughter. Ultimately, the whole, despite a few nice scenes or successful gags, gives the impression of being deprived of spirit - which seduced some of the viewers in the first part. The film tries to evoke emotions but is afraid of them, as soon as it gets a little more serious for a moment, immediately adds a fight scene, or a stupid joke - as if afraid that if it gets serious, the viewers will leave the cinema. For this - which I do not particularly like - it is not able to show the transformations of heroes in any way. They are supposed to change a bit here, but they really have to stay more or less in the same place where they started, because viewers like them so much. While watching I did not play badly but I still have the impression that it was unnecessary movie.
Avengers: Age of Ultron - never a movie has disappointed my hopes like the second edition of the Avengers. Mainly because I liked the first installment of the adventures of the group of super heroes, but also because I hoped that the new narration would somehow sensibly advance our group's history. In the meantime, I got a film that was chaotic, in many places it withdrew the changes that took place in the universe (or. in the first few moments, the great threat of Hydra was dealt with). In the film itself there are a few, in my opinion, nightmarish solutions - such as poorly guided "side quest" of Thor, or the horribly written romance of Black Widow and Hulk. In addition, the film suffered from the presence of an extremely weak opponent - such was Ultron and an exceptionally lazy written place of action - Sokovia is such a stereotypical space that the teeth hurt. Above all, it was a clumsy movie, somehow unable to tell a story so that it would not reach us that all this does not make sense. Personally, I think that this is perhaps the worst Marvel movie in terms of how weakly it tells its story.
The Incredible Hulk - honestly - the film is high on my list because I do not have great feelings for it - neither negative nor positive. I remember that when I watched it, I liked it quite a bit, although I was entertained by such a schematic opponent and already on the stage in which the hero can not consume a relationship with a girl because as his pulse speeds up he will turn into green, I giggled like a schoolgirl. But ultimately - it was quite a pleasant production from times when it was not yet sure whether anything more of these films from comics goes. I remember how amazing it was when Robert Downey Jr. appeared in one of the scenes - you understand the character from one film adaptation in another movie - it was amazing. The other thing, though I think Mark Ruffalo is a brilliant Hulk, but my great love for Edward Norton will always make me look at the film with great fondness.
Iron Man 2 - I perfectly remember that I was delighted with this film. Oh how the life and taste of a man changes. The second Iron Man was a movie in which everything had to be more, and at the same time - watching the movie slowly felt that if the second part cease to be a continuation of strength, they become part of a larger whole. The conflict that is present in the center - actually a double conflict - appealed to me quite well. And the vision that armour is not good for Tony's health has always seemed to me as an interesting introduction of this superhero cost thread. Another thing, these were the times when I could watch every movie from RDJ and be satisfied with purely aesthetic reasons. Eventually, after many years, my biggest accusation to the film is that it turned out to be such an ordinary film about a superhero, a film whose existence can be quickly forgotten without harming anyone. It is a pity that Mickey Rourke is so poorly used in this film - it was such an occasion when it seemed that he would return permanently to cinematography but after a few roles Hollywood still has no idea for him. On the other hand, Iron Man 2 is a movie that could not make the most of Sam Rockwell, so maybe it's no wonder.
Iron Man 3 - Overall, I think it is a really good movie that has good moments. For example, the fact that events from the Avengers reflected Tony's mental state, something that in my opinion was a phenomenal addition to such light-weight stories about super heroes. Personally, I am impressed by the fact that we managed to make a movie in which there is any suspense - something that does not necessarily come out in the case of super heroic production. What bothers me - I still have the impression that the scriptwriters did not really know how to write a relationship between Tony and Pepper so that there would be conflict in it and at the same time - hope for the future. In the end there are a lot of scenes that seem a bit pointless. The whole Extremist that appears in the production seems to be a necessary nod to the comics but at the same time - I also do not have the impression that anyone would like to pull this thread, which I do not like because I want these films to go forward and not stand in one place. I am a little sorry for how weakly Rebecca Hall, a great actress who often in American films can not really find herself, is used to a great extent. In the end, the film itself is nice, although today I think about it as a production that had more imperfections than hit moments.
Iron Man - I remember how shocking it all was when Iron Man turned out to be an amazing hit. It was long before RDJ was the highest-paid actor in Hollywood and was still primarily associated with arrest and drug problems. What's more - I had to dedicate myself to exactly who Iron Man is and what is happening in the Marvel universe. The network covered articles about the production phenomenon, which was considered at that time as a certain risk. But the risk that succeeded. Today, Iron Man does not feel like it once. Yes Tony Stark is still probably the best man in the Marvel story but the action itself is very simple or even schematic. Years later, Iron Man began to get a bit bored - especially since it relies on such an incredibly classic layout and plot construction. Still, the first half hour defends the movie, which invariably looks with pleasure because it is actually a great introduction to the world and presentation of the hero's character. Perhaps my opinion of Iron Man is also influenced by the fact that I have seen it many times and unfortunately these films - the more times you watch them the more defects you see.
Guardians of The Galaxy - My problem with the Guardians of the Galaxy is this - I do not like the main character, Star-Lord. Is it the result of my irrational dislike of Chris Pratt or the hero is too "boyish" hard to say. In any case - I never liked him. Film like a second Thor suffers from a problem with well-written bad character. Painting Lee Pace in blue is not enough to create a character that we will really be afraid of. No less Guardians were really different. Another world, a different view of the characters, lots of colors and an excellent soundtrack. Personally, I'm willing to go back to the movie, I put it higher on the list because it was Marvel's first film on which I cried. I was crying because Raccoon was saying goodbye to the big talking tree. And there was no more moving scene in Marvel's story than this one. Overall, I think that Bradley Cooper should get a reward for creating the most moving role of the shed in the history of cinema.
The Avengers - I do not remember that any other Marvel movie caused such enthusiasm during my first viewing. It was the Avengers, not Thor, that made Loki a certain phenomenon of the MCU - a secondary figure who was in the background. Besides, I will never forget that feeling of triumph when in the end it turned out that a really ideal actor was found to play the Hulk - because Mark Ruffalo is the perfect Banner. Besides - what was the moment when enthusiasm arose from the fact that several heroes from completely different films are simultaneously in the same movie. In addition, to this day I wonder what actually happened in Budapest and I think that building such an unspoken heroes' past was one of the most charming elements of production. I still enjoy the scenes from this movie, I still think that Hawkeye should get his own production and to this day I can see that the phrases from this production are quoted most often. Is this a good movie? Well, unfortunately - the more you think about it and the more you watch it the more you see that there are more narrative holes in it than in Swiss cheese. But it was still a moment when you could turn a blind eye to it and have a great time. It is true that after a few replays it was not possible to have as much fun as the first time, but a nice memory was left.
Ant-Man - in my opinion, this is a movie that tells Marvel what to do when we will meet all heroes in one movie and finish everything with a bang with a repulse. Well, Ant-Man is a smaller, intimate production, largely taking place in the margins of the story of saving the world. Personally, I like it very much - especially since it was not difficult for me to like the protagonist and what's more - to put it in some social reality (a wonderful description of how difficult it is to get a job after a prison) and family (I liked the topic of a new wife's former husband - run a little differently than completely stereotypically). Ultimately, Ant-Man was above all a pleasant film, efficiently realized and though using the super heroes cinema scheme it is also close to the story of a charming thief and a complicated assault plan. What's more, even if it was viewed for the second or third time, it did not necessarily lose its attractiveness. Ultimately, going to a more intimate story definitely came out to the health of the plot. And one would like more such films.
Venom - is actually two movies. The first is such an average and schematic adaptation of the comic. The good character, bad in black turtleneck, ex-girlfriend and "something from space". A little chase on a motorcycle, running in the woods, brawl at the end, because the world is saved by punching on face and maybe one or two moments of struggle that should somehow move us or seem interesting, but let's not hide - we've seen it so much times, that actually the viewer's brain is at this moment on such a specific stand-by, that is, you wait.
But Venom is also the second movie. And this second movie is ... surprising. Said story about Venom as a "buddha comedy" about two buddies who are teasing all the time. Both of them did not work out a bit, but they have a good relationship - they want to get back the girl, spend the good time and maybe bite off someone's head. And yes ... I forgot that one of our losers is a journalist from Earth and another symbiotic alien with a weakness for human meat. Besides, both gentlemen understand each other quite well, sometimes tease a little.
Yes, Venom for some strange reason, instead of being a dark and morally ambiguous comic adaptation, has become a movie that, no worse than Deadpool, deals with the idiocy of many comics assumptions. Watching Venom seriously does not make sense because this movie works only and is viewed as a comedy.
Spider-Man: Homecoming - up to three times. This time we managed to cast Spider-Man perfectly (although I still think that Andrew Garfield was a very good cast decision - it's a pity that the second movie was so bad) and above all - to escape from this horrifying enchanted circle of confronting Spider-Man with increasingly idiotic opponents. Here, the opponent has the right motivations (and Michael Keaton plays it, which is always a plus) and is not completely idiotic. Also, there was no big affair with Gwen or Mary Jane, so it was not the third time that the same story was played. And that's how a nice story about a teenager who wants to help others, but it's not easy, and he likes to build a Lego Death Star with his friend. Well, how not to like him. Plus, it's nice to introduce Tony Stark as perhaps the worst mentor in the history of mentors who seems to be like fathers to their children. A pleasant, light and bursting movie from the story of the beginnings of the protagonist came out. I do not conceal in my opinion the movie would be better if it was filmed entirely like the first scenes - as a relation made with a mobile phone. It would be a great risk but the effect could exceed the wildest expectations.
Doctor Strange - I will not charm you or "cheat" for me this film is interesting because of two elements. First - because of the cast, and secondly because of the cape. But seriously, I love the cast of this movie - it looks like a worldwide congress of aliens who are ineptly pretending to be human (seriously Benedict, Tilda, Mads embrace - people do not talk that way). What does not change the fact that just good acting makes the film look good, especially if we add a bit different and really visually interesting special effects. For this is a classic story about the hero's beginnings, but there is a lot of humor in it, and moments that we do not necessarily expect. Another thing - I will always be delighted with how ultimately the great conflict does not end with a spectacular murder. The spectacular fighting scenes became boring. Another thing - in terms of aesthetics it was such a good step towards the fact that the films, visually different from each other and had their own style. Well, Benedict and his rebellious cape are in the big world of MCU because it really was a good addition.
Thor - It's still a phenomenal movie in many respects. First of all - it was possible to naturally enter Marvel's cosmic dimension - something that may have seemed strange and did not match the previous story "went in" very well. Second - casting. By the end of my days, I will thank the heavens that Branagh got a free hand at the casting, firstly - the cast is much more diverse than the comic (you imagine Thor without Idris Elba? I do not) and secondly - two actors not really known. Hemstworth turned out to be such a good Thor that it is hard to believe that it was possible to do such a casting. In turn, Hiddleston probably for many years would have played supporting roles in the British series (hence they knew each other with Branagh) before anyone could see that he is ideally suited as an export product. Thirdly - all Shakespeare's threads speak to me, especially the perfect scene of confrontation between Odin and Loki. Ultimately, I think that despite the weaker tip is really great.
Capitan America: Civil War - let it be clear - I rate this film very highly. First of all, for creating a conflict situation that actually prevents finding a simple solution, even if the protagonists try to solve it in accordance with the old rule - fighting, it turns out that this conflict can not be solved by banging on the head. Some things can not be done with fists. The other thing is to develop the story of the Winter Soldier - which was theoretically to be crucial in the previous version of Captain America, but it is only here that we begin to understand how important it is. For this good and unnecessary introduction of the Black Panther. But above all - a perfectly written conflict between Tony Stark and the Captain. There is a scene where Robert Downey Jr. proves why he is considered a good actor - when in one sentence he shows why the conflict between him and Rogers is impossible to solve. Seriously it is really a great movie. In my opinion - one of the best showing that super heroic films have the potential to create conflicts much deeper and more serious than just "the big evil from space wants to conquer the earth". Well, one more important thing is really the only movie so far about the super heroes that actually does not end well. In fact, it ends very sadly and badly. So even a big plus for that.
Thor: Ragnarok - wonderful, psychedelic, crazy ride without a stick. Proof that nothing better performs super heroes than a sense of humor and betting on a bit of fun and madness. Tikka Waitit proved that the director absolutely does not have to give up his sense of humor (regardless of how strange it would be) and the sense of aesthetics behind the door. On the contrary - the more you bring to the film, the better fun it gives viewers. In any case, Thor Ragnarok let Thor come up again, gave Chris Hemsworth a lot of fun to discover Thor anew, and reminded us all that every movie gets a little better if Jeff Goldblum gets involved. Regardless of whether Hel is a good opponent for Thor, and whether the film has only the appearance of some deeper thought, I do not remember when I was having such a great time in the movie and I was so delighted with the change in the hero's behavior. Plus - it is finally a movie that completely changes the previously established status quo. And here it always comes - that the films, however, would cause some consequences and not only show us the same story over and over again in the unchanging world.
Black Panther - a movie phenomenon. Perhaps - the most important film of the super heroine - in terms of how it changed the way people think about the industry for many viewers and producers. Perfectly embedded in the world created by him. Settled by well-written and played characters - especially feminine. Extending the story of heroes from the United States and transferring them to a place more spectacular than space - to developed Africa. It is hard not to notice how much the Black Panther has become more than just a movie how much it revived the audience who felt previously ignored. At the same time, it is a good plot which, more than the problems of super heroes, revolves around the problems of the rulers, putting in the center of almost Shakespeare drama based on various visions of the king's authority and duties. In addition, the film offers a slightly different world visually than the one we are accustomed to, and adds to the discussion about whether you can maintain the wealth of the nation at the expense of those who are right next to you. Excellent, different production, which it did for the team more than anyone could have expected.
Capitan America: The Winter Soldier - in the first place a film that in my opinion raised stories about super heroes two degrees higher. But before that - let's say the biggest advantage of the second Captain of America was the change in the status quo - the introduction of modern Hydra, SHIELD infiltration - all this changed a certain system to which viewers got used to. And it was the best - because the world began to change, actually from that moment it was impossible not to see all the films at least from this earthly line of the story - because you could not understand what was going on. In addition, in the comics everything changes non-stop (remaining to a certain degree immutable) so it was nice to see something similar in the film. Another issue is the very message of the film - showing how easily people get rid of freedom in the face of fear, the danger of restricting civil rights in the name of stopping terrorism. In addition, the main character betrayed by the ideals he served. The whole is more like a spy movie than a typical story of super heroes. And there's a lot of modern thinking fears about politics - especially the American ones. I liked the additional bond created in the film between Captain America and the Black Widow - somehow I have not noticed how well these two characters work together. Also in this video, Chris Evans found his idea of what the Captain should be and must admit - he managed to create an incredibly sincere character. One that gets more and more interesting with every new movie. I have the impression that Marvel is still trying to catch up with this second Captain America and is sometimes closer - as in the case of the Civil War - sometimes further. But generally speaking - in the final analysis MCU in the edition of brothers Russo won the MCU in the edition of Whedon. And good.
This is what my list looks like. I still didn't watch two productions from the MCU: Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, but I will just give me some time. I put Venom because it's one of the Spidermen opponents and this heroes isn't completely a bad guy. I watch it like a couple weeks ago so my opinion is still quite fresh and positive.
With this summary, I realized that in almost every Marvel movie I have some kind of my favourites, scene, usually a glimpse of this not-great-heroic world - a world of emotions, fear and a sense of being lost. Because after all these years of watching films about superheroes I can tell you that I have no doubt that I like them the most when they are not so great - actually when they are lost and a little scared. And maybe it sometimes makes me like these moments when nobody is saving the world temporarily and you can see a man under the mask and cloak for a moment.
