OBSESSION: A story about addiction
Image taken from source
Addiction is a popular essay question in exams in my country's secondary school curriculum. I find that in order to help the students in the secondary level to focus on talking about addiction aside from drugs is to talk about addiction towards other things such as cellphones, games and social media.
With that in mind, when introducing the topic, a short story that can be used. Before requiring the students to read, the teacher can first ask the students what are their thoughts on addiction. Please take note that due to the genre and content of the story, this is reserved for teens, secondary school students or college students only.
OBSESSION
I thought it was probably harmless and I took it in my hand, it was cold, black. It had a glow to it and then...
It happened.
I tried it for the first time. It's hard describing it to you, you'll probably not understand, but it was like my mind was opened! I could fly, I soared through the sky for that brief moment and then I stopped. I turned to look at the clock. What seemed like minutes, was actually hours! I had to leave or else my parents would be worried.
That night, I could not sleep. The thought, the sensation still lingering in my mind, I wanted... No, I needed to try it again.

The next day, I went back to Jaime's and I tried it again. This went on for months, I lost focus in class. I only felt alive when I was at Jaime's and not long after that, Jaime stopped inviting me over. He did not like that I was coming over so often.
Whatever.
I can manage, I know what I needed to do. I took out my savings, every last bit of it and I was 500 dollars short. The thought of giving up did pass my mind, but I could not bear the thought being away from it. So, I stole. From my friends, from my parents. I was good, so no one noticed.
With the money, I went to the nearest store and bought that beautiful box of green and black. The one with the X marked on it, as if it was some kind of forbidden fruit. As I got home, I did the necessary preparations and booted up my newly bought gaming console in the secrecy of my room, all was well again. But it was not.

After a month, my parents noticed something amiss. One night they burst into the room while I was on my gaming console, they questioned how I managed to purchase something like this, I came clean and told them everything.
They were furious, they threatened to get rid of my gaming console. It was at that moment, that an overwhelming anger came over me. I did not know what came over me, it was as if something in my mind snapped. I couldn't control myself as I yelled, screamed and threw anything I could find around the room. As my mom tried to stop me, I shoved her into the cupboard and she slammed into it, head first.
There was some blood on the cupboard where mom slammed into it.
That's when the rage stopped. That's when the guilt set in. That was when she had 5 stitches on her forehead. That's why I'm now at a safe place, away from it all, recovering. I wonder if I would ever feel like how I felt the first time I started playing video games. But looking back...
Perhaps it's best that I never touch video games again.
The follow-up activities to this story includes, writing a short essay on the ill effects of addiction or the teacher can also initiate a short discussion. Furthermore, this story can be used if the teacher chooses to teach creative writing as well.
I hope this was helpful and I hope you enjoy the story. Please take note that all characters and story is a work of fiction, no one was hurt. However, I can't deny that some of it was from experience. =)
