How to make a life long basic sewing pattern / 人生を通じて使える洋服原型の作り方

Recent years it has been my life work to make basic sewing patterns for my daily clothes. There are ways to draft a bodice pattern based on one’s body measurements. But I couldn’t apply it well ... So it’s time to make one by myself!

A basic pattern for casual daily dress is what I wanted to make the most. I have been trying to make for more than six years … and seems now it’s done!

I test made a summer dress shown in the photo on top of this post out of it. It worked fine. I was almost jumping! With the pattern now I’m remodeling a dress I made last year.

Here are the tips how to make a life long pattern:

• Figure out which part of your favorite clothes you like. Neckline, arm hole, tightness, line, length etc.
• Figure out which part of your clothes you don’t like. For example fluffy design doesn’t fit for me … I look like a big chunk of fabric ;) I don’t like too tight clothes especially on upper body.
• When you like a pattern, copy or mimic the shapes and lines you like. Avoid the shapes and lines you don’t like. (When you use existing pattern, you can adjust it accordingly.)
• (Optional: Compare your pattern with a basic pattern made with conventional technique and think about what’s the difference and why it there is difference.)

To copy lines from existing clothes, @cryptocariad explained a technique in her post. Tracing the lines with a pencil just putting thin paper on top of clothes works roughly too.

I don’t know why I’m so much into making general basic patterns. Probably it’s my programmer nature to make something basic. And I don’t want to spend so much time on shopping … which I liked in my 20s. It is hard to find clothes with perfect style & material within my budget. I don’t want to rely much on fashion industry with a lot of sacrifice. And I inherit sewing something from my grandma who was professionally sewing for a designer.

It took so long to finish the pattern but I enjoyed the process. Although I may have to adjust the pattern time by time to my body and preference, I don’t have to worry about not finding my ideal dress!

I'm happy as if I found one of my life long treasures.

I will work on a basic pattern for my pant. One of my favorite winter pants starts breaking in unrepairable way ...

この数年、日々着るものについて、人生を通じて使える原型のような型紙を作ろうとしています。一般的な原型の作り方は広く知られていますが、微妙に合わないというか、展開して型紙を作っても必ずしもよいものができず、自分で展開しやすい原型を作ることにしたのです。

中でも一番作りたかったのが日常はもちろん、旅も楽ちん、ちょっとしたお呼ばれもスカーフをまけばOKなワンピースで、ドイツに移る前の京都時代から試行錯誤していました。6年の時を経てできたかな、多分。やったー！

この原型を展開してワンピースを作ってみたところ一番上の写真のように仕上がりました。型紙展開しやすく体に合うものができる。。あとは裏地をつけるのみです。今は去年作った黒いリネンのワンピースもこの型紙をもとに作り直しています。

同じようなことをしてみたい人もいるかもしれないので、一生物の型紙を作るヒントをいくつかリストアップしておきます。

・ 自分で作ったもの、買ったもの、よく着る洋服のどこを気に入っているか考える。ネックライン、アームホール、ズボンであればフィット具合、スカートであればラインや長さ。
・ 苦手な形、自分の体に作りについても考える。私はぶわっと広がりすぎる洋服がダメです、ただでさえ縦横大きいのがさらに巨大になり。かといってぴったりしすぎるのも動きにくくて苦手。
・ 好きなラインを真似する、コピーする、苦手なラインを避けるまたはそうならないように修正する。
・ （オプション： 定番の原型を作って比べてみる）

見てみるとわかるように一朝一夕にはできず時間はかかります。人工知能がビックデータから機械学習するような感じで、ある程度自分の好き嫌い、体型や生活に合う合わないを学習する必要があり、そこから型紙が浮かび上がってくる感じです。

既存の洋服から精密にラインをコピーする方法は@cryptocariadさんの記事が参考になります。適当にコピーする場合は薄手の紙をのせてトレースするのでもOK。

なんでこんなことをしようとしているのか、まだ上手くは説明できませんが、20代ではあんなに楽しんだ買い物が面倒、スタイルと素材ともに気に入ものを予算内でみつけるのはほぼ不可能、世界のどこに引っ越しても自分で作ればいい（生地は大抵手に入る）、児童労働をはじめとする搾取や環境への影響を少なくしたいというのが主たる理由で、プロで縫っていた祖母譲りの洋裁好きもあります。なんでも一般化したいプログラマー魂みたいなのもあるのかも。

険しい道のりではなかったものの、長ーい時間がかかるプロセスをほぼ終えて、今後も体型や好みの変化に合わせて修正は必要だけれど「ああ、もう人生でワンピースに困らなくていいんだ！」とすがすがしい気持ちになりました。

ズボンも遠からず原型ができると思います・・・ふたつしかない冬にはくズボンのひとつが直しようのない感じで壊れ始めているので。。
