Covid cases are rising in cities across China days after the government appeared to give in to public outrage and relaxed lockdown and testing regulations. Beijing made an almost immediate major policy change in response to unprecedented protests against its stifling Covid curbs.
However, the abrupt reversal of Covid policy has resulted in chaos as hospitals struggle to contain infections and authorities are still unsure of the best course of action to take to control the virus.

However, the figures show that testing requirements have been reduced. Workers who fell ill or were sent to makeshift Covid hospitals were blamed for staff shortages at some large city hospitals. Offices are deferring or suspending medicines. People, particularly the elderly, have been urged by authorities to wear marks and get vaccinated.

The public has already flocked to purchase rapid antigen test kits, masks, and other safety items in a lot of Chinese cities. China's health infrastructure is poorly prepared. In the face of Covid concerns, China works to resolve problems with medical supplies and avoid price gouging. China's sudden turn has surprised investors and economists, making it harder to predict how the country's new policies will affect economic growth.

Investors were concerned that rising infections might disrupt consumption and manufacturing, which led to a general decline in China's stock markets and a retreat in the yuan from its previous session's near three-month high.

However, for the same reason, demand for stocks in Chinese pharmaceutical companies, mask manufacturers, providers of antigen tests, and funeral services surged. Monday also saw gains in travel-related stocks and Chinese airlines.
