What's Wrong With Our IPFS?

People,

IPFS isn't really delivering for us at present. In this video I ask why.

I have attempted to pin my own videos to Eternum to ensure there is a seeded copy. For whatever reason my pins will not copy off the dtube servers.

I have also learned that the file hash of uploaded videos is different to the hash of the original file. Therefore, there is no point pre-seeding. The best one can do is upload the file to dtube, download the newly hashed copy, then upload it to a backup server for pinning.

Wow. Sounds like a lot of bother and I'm sure most people wont be bothered to do that. Thanks for your input.

I would put up more videos if I could reasonably expect them to stay up.

One way dtube could solve this is to allow us to pin our videos on dtube hosted elsewhere. That is, we can host our own seed and have dtube serve the hash, temporarily seeding a copy for the first week.

Building your own server and running a #onelovedtube uploader you can host your own dtube videos for as long as you want. Though there is technical skills needed to build such a server, a paid option is also available for others to save videos if someone is not technically inclined.

Don’t worry, decentralization is still growing, don’t expect too much for now.

Good video @adetorrent

Great video and love your British accent. Everyone knows those irriting problems but I keep going to help and growth the Steem blockchain!

Something may be wrong somewhere.

As with most early technology, it will take time to adopt and scale. Given the limited reach still on our distributed network, nodes are probably still limited in what they can do. However, I think it will continue to grow and as storage and bandwidth gets cheaper, it will expand and improve the experience.

Yes, I think storage cost is primary reason they disappear. @onelovedtude has created a paid service to upload and pin you dtube videos to help with that problem. Several creators I follow do maintain their own IPFS nodes to resolve the pinning issue. Time will tell what works best.

I would be willing to run my own IPFS node but both money and lack of understanding keep me from doing it. Regarding the HUGE censorship wave, that hit mainstream social media last year, we are better thinking this through. Why can't it be es easy as running a torrent client?

I always compared the sytem in steem with the water steaming. While that's steaming, we see that, than it just desapear. The same about our content here. We have 7 days while our content is steeming, then almost nobody look at it. That's why I think it's ok that those videos are deleted, we will not earn anything from them anyway.
