Mesmerising!

A scene from the Balinese Kecak dance drama
Also known as the Ramayana Monkey Chant, it depicts a popular battle from the Ramayana ~ basically a tale of good triumphing over evil
A right feast for the senses ~ the characters, masks, costumes
the colours of the set, richness of the traditional wear and props
The mainly male performers in checked cloth tied at their waists,
chant 'cak, cak, cak, cak...'
like waves of a percussion that accompany the action on centrestage
Audiences would attest to the very heady experience of the performance!

Let me tell you a story. The conventional version of the Ramayana's Lanka battle, which is depicted in the dance here; is widely interpreted as a battle between good and evil, just like you have described. So the main literal story is Ravan (who is a Rakhasa, monster)captured Sita, who is Ram's (the aryan king) wife and took her to Lanka as a captive. Ram was in exile at the time, and had no army; so he made friends with a monkey kingdom, and used the strength of a monkey army to attack Lanka, and free Sita.

However, during later research, it is widely understood part of the epic can be historical. And the thought process is Ravana, was just a south Indian, Dravirian King, and Ram was the Aryan King from the North. Monkeys are just a tribe who lived in the periphery of either kingdom. The battle is not a battle between good and evil; but of races. Battle between white and black people. Sita is not kidnapped really, she was in love with Ravana. Actually even in the original epic, after rescued she didn't go home with Ram. When Ram accused her of adultery, she sacrificed herself. So the alternate interpretation makes a lot of sense to me at least...

Aren't epics fun!?

Wonderful shot by the way, vignette works and the expression captured at the right moment. I wish for a close up. That 200mm lens..... :)

So much drama... such is life, I suppose. Anyway, proves that there's more than meets the eye?!!
Hence, we get sayings like: Fact is stranger than fiction, Art imitates life, etc

Yes, epics are wonderful... 😄
Thank you very much, I wanted the vignette to leave only the action to be seen and cut off the 'distractions'. 200mm, yeah yeah...
