Why projects should build their communities on Steem

in #steem6 years ago

I have written countless of posts in the past explaining why it's much better for announcements of new projects and their team and communities to exist on Steem instead of Medium/Reddit/Telegram/etc. Here is another reason to make it a bit more obvious in case some people still are having trouble understanding the implications. I saw this post surface on Reddit today after Binance recently announced the removal of 5 different coins with Substratum being one of them.

Full Thread on Reddit, worth reading through the comments if you are an investor or are thinking about buying the dip (plz don't)

So without getting too much into what the project is, what it does or what they're plans are, the screenshot maybe explains it rather well. I want to bring up why all of these would do way better on Steem.

First off, obviously no censorship. No matter what you have to say, it will be there. It may be flagged, they may think you're trolling and flag you but other readers thinking you're not trolling may counter the flags. This gives the wisdom of the crowd the power to decide what should be visible and what shouldn't. Of course trolling and being an ass for the sake of being an ass should get flagged and I'm sure the majority of stakeholders will agree on that, but no criticism that has any substance will be unfairly flagged and remain that way here.

Another great thing that we got here which doesn't exist on the other platforms, or it may exist but only a handful of people may have access to it, is transparency of all actions and from which accounts they've come from. This means that people can of course attempt to manipulate the flagging system through alt accounts, delegations, etc. With enough research though many of these attempts can be tracked down to the root and unfair flagging will come to light sooner or later. Of course many will never truly figure out who was behind the manipulation, but they will find out there was manipulation to begin with which is more than what can be said about current platforms where only admins can track the actions of users. We have the blockchain and I'm sure over time tools and AI will be created to aid in this scenario.

So why is this important? It's important for many reasons. For one it will help our own community of users avoid scams, shady actions and uncertain projects from getting away with too much value. On second hand it will also help many readers that over time tend to trust the judgement of Steemians which are growing in numbers and distribution over time. Meaning more and more people will be better off reading and doing research on Steem which is completely transparent and you can't delete and censor whoever you want.

At the same time all of this will also strengthen the trust in the project to begin with. "Project X makes their announcement on censorship-resistant blockchain and will post updates there". Users will likely trust the project more only cause they have the balls to discuss everything involved on a platform without censorship.

It's kind of annoying in my opinion that we aren't seeing more of these popping up but using sites like Medium or Reddit instead which is a total mess where abuse is constantly brought up to light, makes me wonder how big the percentage is of the shit that doesn't become public knowledge.

Thanks for reading, I'll appreciate discussions on this subject in the comments below!

I think the issue is visibillity and/or the creation of communities. Id love to see crypto projects start doing announcements on Steem instead of bitcointtalk, but the few projects I see active on the site garner very little support.

It would be nice if new crypto projects made an announcement on the platform to attract attention there would be some way to highlight that announcement outside of paying for upvotes.

I definitely share in the frustration as I see the potential for building your following, communities, and projects on this platform and cant wait to see the day some of this is even partially realized.

You hit upon one of the most undervalued aspect to Steem. The ability for no text to be censored. It appears on the blockchain in the exact format it was posted. Nobody can alter or delete without a super majority from the Witnesses meaning that it will not happen.

People think that interfaces blocking something means it is not there. It is on the blockchain and can always be read in the native format. Even communities, when that is implemented, will give the ability to moderate but what is posted will feed through to the blockchain.

I do not know why serious writers who experience censorship do not at least cross post their content on Steem. This will give them an avenue where it is always out there. I guess it is the lack of knowledge of this platform.

censorship through downvoting can work - if your posts were part of your income...and you were downvoted for the content.
Incentives and disincentives to an action- is a deep part of the human psyche.

I wont screen shot my latest flagg- oneof which was as question of how to expand the steemit user base!?!?!? YES, SERIOUSLY.
Downvoted for discussing the expansion of steemit into new areas...! go figure..

I like reddit but I don't trust most communities that over censor. Blocking troll or anyone who whines about downvotes or frequently edits posts is fine. However, these companies trying to polish their image on the net are just asking for trouble.
When I worked for a company where the reddit community was bigger than our offical web forums, we just 'ignored' and let reddit manage themselves, they would share our official blogs and everyone knew our email.
It allowed for a great resource for us to get unbiased opinions because people weren't afraid to speak out at risk of getting banned. Sure the community would self police complete stupidity, but apart from outrageous lies that had no merit, it was all good.
I wish toeken communitues could adopt that approach, just post a sticky of official medium blog and telegram....or use steemit.

Well... You make a good point as to why they should build their communities here. The problem is that there is a tendency in the crypto sphere of people calling other projects shitcoins and trash.
You could build the best social media site on top of STEEM and Vergians, Bitcoin maximalists, Eth lovers still wouldnt use it... They would actually hate STEEM even more for it.

So really, projects building communities here is a stretch and wont happen any time soon.
Especially in a bear market when the competition is even bigger.
I hate to say it but hype is what will get folks here, not much else..

I can understand your point and this platform could really win with some more big project if some companies took it more seriously, like on other social media.

In my opinion, the real problem is not a matter of bringing them all, but make steemit part of their initial choice when they share.

It is even desirable that companies can continue to share in reddit, medium and others. It should not be a matter of 'fighting' to see which platform is the best, since they have totally different readers and audiences. The goal should always focus on providing and adding value to the project in order to spread the message as best it can to grow and thrive independently of the chosen medium.

I think that with time and the growth of the steemit platform that will happen sooner or later. However, as with all successful networks and social media, the platform must first focus on attracting the masses and when they are consolidated, only then companies start looking at these media as serious ways of capitalizing on and sharing large projects.

Well that's a good reason for end users and steemians but not for companies..
Most of them want to censor - if not, they wouldnt do it.. (?)

Anyways. I think it will take some time to educate the mass. Most people dont even know what they really want.
Or why do ads work that good?
Or why are people electing people, who dont do what they say?

And therefore also take some time until steem can unfold its full potential.

Good article :)

Most of them want to censor - if not, they wouldnt do it.. (?)

Why though? If they want to censor they have shit to hide. :D

Yes - as most history..

That's what Im trying to say.

We first need to generate demand until we can supply.

Without electric cars there would be way less demand for green energy.

It needs time and especially work.

Does Medium really censor articles?? I would wonder... but I see your point and it would be good, when more and more projects come to Steemit too!

I'm not too familar with Medium, they're constant reminders to create an account piss me off, lol. Not sure how their comment section works, I'm guessing the author has a way to delete those comments.

Oh yeah, didnt think about the comment section. Sure! Steemit is perfect - all comments allowed and transparent and if there are troll or other shit comments, we just can flag them!

funny you should say that !
I got flagged for a @comedyopenmic piece about alexandria cortex not being very bright...

AND

A piece, asking the question about marketing campaigns involving steemit to gab, and not twitter????

bloomy.jpg

Seem a bit bizarre to be to flagged (total flag value 32 cents), for laughing , and asking people about ways to expand steemit through marketing campaigns.

And this helps steemit grow in size, how? ffss.
What is going on??!!!
