Steem thoughts

in #followers5 years ago

As someone who's been thinking of trimming their following list at some point in the future when I find the time, there are a few things that have come to mind of what to look out for that I wanted to share some thoughts on. Often it may be small things like this one but it could incite some nice discussions regarding it.

The reason I am following so many is due to my curation and wanting to curate as broadly as possible and incentivize a lot of different "cultures" on Steem. Once @ocd is back at curating fully it will give me a semi auto curation opportunity to focus on my following again. Those that post about things that really interest me and I've gotten to know better and at the same time finetune my feed a bit more so I can enjoy everything Steem better.

Resteems.
I've tried using resteems depending on important posts of that day in my opinion but at the same time letting people know about new things that are popping up on the Steem blockchain. I realize that many due occasionally unfollow someone based on something they didn't like having seen resteemed and that's okay, everything can be judged in any way by anyone on this blockchain and everyone is free to do however they like and most of the time without getting flagged over it.

Something I've noticed happening quite often lately is that the user you are following also comments on that post. This is something we should encourage being done more often not just based off the comment, but leaving any percentage vote on the user that made you stumble upon this post which you may or may not reward with a vote as well. There are so many reasons why this option would be awesome to get more people to do them, no matter how small the vote or percentage is.

It rewards the resteemer as a referral sort of way where it's a win-win for both resteemer+commenter and possibly the author. (and of course also the voter in curation)
Not counting bots, it also shows who the active Steemians are and reliably often resteem good stuff and how many supporters that resteemer has behind them.
Could open up a possible advertisement market that rewards good resteemers with genuine votes behind them for resteems. If the resteemers sell out and resteem garbage stuff they lose followers and amount of votes on their comments thus its in the interest of both advertisers to provide quality and in the resteemers interest to not lose followers thus continuing a long and healthy advertisement "career".

The issue is that it could alter the rank of comments quite a lot. I realize some authors don't like when other curators reward the users on their comment page with votes cause it messes up the order they'd want to present to readers. I've also heard that some authors take it personally if a curator rewards a comment to the top that could somehow be translated as offensive in hiding and thought of too much into what the meaning was.

I've personally thought of it as if bigger users were to reward comments on my page with a lot of votes and value it just means that will make that commenter come back cause they felt they were doing something right. Although I'm not saying that that's the only reason people comment on posts, but it can make you more active to comment. I know for instance there's been many times on Reddit where I've been reading a discussion and both parties were wrong cause they didn't know about something that had happened which changed everything, but explaining the whole story took more time than I had or thought were worth to spend time writing to two random strangers on the internet arguing about nothing they could've helped.

Anyway, if you appreciate good resteems and like reading the comment section and notice the person resteeming it has commented something, let him know with a small vote. Would be cool if we could maybe fund resteems their own reward pool and have a front-end like Steeve that just creates a comment and uses your vote on it to send you a "resteem reward" in 7 days.

What are your thoughts on this?

Could this bring integrity and effective marketing for Steem users resteems? Survival of the fittest /who knows their followers and what they want best?

Unfortunately I have no advertisement experience as I find all of them quite dumb unless it's about PC stuff where I can feel the difference from graphic card x and y. :D

I like that idea. It would be an incentive for people to resteem. And of course you can't abuse it either because you need to not spam your followers. If multiple people resteemed it then does it get split 3 ways? Might be a problem with smaller votes.

You know, I often forget to resteem. It is not like I am posting more than once a day so I would not be clogging up anyone’s feed. I do it when I see a cause or an informative steem post or enter a contest. Gives me pause for thought for sure.

I also try and reward the commenters in my posts and answer all of them in the spirit of respect for their effort and you get in some great conversations. I don’t have the legions you do and I manually curate everything which has its benefits and draw backs.

Maybe a bot that does a tipu for resteems once a day or something? I wonder what would work best.

The prospect of advertising income as part of the steem business is definitely nice though.

Yeah a bot could surely be nice, either tips them or creates a comment for them combined with the $rewarding x minutes bot would cast your vote at 15mins automatically or something. This would hit two issues in one go as many I have talked to lately find the 15min curation penalty to be unnecessary for comments*.

Maybe @holger80 checks his notifications and can give us some thoughts on this idea. ^^

I know our SMT wings have been clipped temporally but what if you vote on a post that is resteemed on your feed, the person that resteemed it gets a smt rewarding him, like a curation token or something...

The main problem is what would give value to that token... maybe instead the resteemer can get 5-10% of the value of the vote you give IF you don't follow the person he resteemed? I think it can work with the correct numbers...

Yeah that's interesting, the follow thing is really cool cause it would give diminishing returns to your rewards from the same author short term until you get a lot more new followers. Dang, it's kinda genius really. :D I wonder what % authors would be comfortable with knowing went to the person resteeming, you'd think any since they may not have received that vote at all. Unless they were aiming to go for trending and receiving a vote through that. lol but yeah great idea for a start. :D

It could be cheated though, by bid bots, because bid bots don't follow anyone so they could have a different account resteem a post, vote on it and they not only get the curation money but also the 10% you would be getting for voting a resteem of someone you don't follow but I'm pretty a smarter person could make a system like this work...

btw whats keeping @ocd from working @ 100%? anything we can do to help? I'm already on the whitelist and support the account with a witness vote.

There's just a lot of additions coming it's way that take a lot of time planning and co-ordinating. Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the amount and the wrong people going slightly afk at a time like this. :P

I actually like those thatbhave become serial experts on resteems. One example I can say is @riseofth. While I don’t agree with all the posts resteemed, it provides good perspectives and has broaden my view of content here. It has also led for me to follow more accounts in my own effort to curate the community. However, like yourself, I am overdue a purge of my following accounts!

I think having separate rewards for resteems is a great idea!🙂 personally, I haven’t been the most active resteemer. I resteem more than I did when I first joined steemit though.

I think separate rewards for resteems would encourage more people to resteem. There would be a larger incentive to do so. Resteeming is something I’ve been trying to do more but it can be somewhat tricky since the stuff I resteem doesn’t have much to do with my artwork.

I was thinking about making a separate account dedicated to resteeming more content, but that’s still just a thought.

Bottom line though... I think more rewards incentivize more activity. Hopefully it’s the kind of activity that you’re shooting for if you want more people resteeming quality content.

I admit, I forget to resteem at times.

Anyway, @ocd is the one which gave me hope here on Steem back in 2017. I am almost ot give up until I received an upvote on my post. Thanks.

One of the reasons i have you on my feed is for the resteems. i keep my feed limited as a control so i don't blow all my voting manna on frivolous things. I do forget to give you the credit though. thanks for the reminder
EDIT: I do dump a lot of accounts due to the amount and quality of resteems though

Interesting, yeah I've been thinking about being a little more strict next time I'm trimming my "curation feed".

i auto upvote a heap of actifitters because that's my thing - do i have a 100 of them on my feed? Hell no :)

Wow, interesting to reward resteem as well. As far as I’m concern, I have only experienced @justyy way of curating posts, leaving a comment below the posts and asked the author to acknowledge with a reply so that the author could get an extra boost of vote based on the daily top posts selection he curated (as top posts, seldom resteem). Well, it could be the same way but by resteem. I believe that resteem will help to increase the post’s exposure, even though they may not comment on the post. Anyway, this resteem idea is definitely a yes, why not?

Hmm, no offense to the idea as I'm sure he had the best intentions in mind but it seems quite easily gamed by bots that didn't really read it. I prefer genuine comments like these instead. :D

and yeah I'm sure many don't have much to say about their resteem, I've also been thinking about a "note" system that next to the resteemed by user shows a note that user left for like "hey guys check this new dapp out, really cool" or "easy way to get a nice airdrop in here", etc. That note could then be a comment that exists somewhere and can receive votes.

Got it @acidyo, true on the part where bots will dominate this game again and make it less sincere and engaging.

As for the ‘note’ system, I’m visualizing that like a pop up ad 😂 which may be a new revenue source too!

I realize that many due occasionally unfollow someone based on something they didn't like having seen resteemed and that's okay,

The only reason I've ever unfollowed someone is because they spam resteemed stuff (Like, 40 posts in 2 hours). I think it's pretty silly to unfollow someone over something they've resteemed unless it was exceptionally heinous. Then again, people do love to baby rage over stupid shit :)

I think this could be a good incentive and it would be worth a try if you could get something together for it. But, then again I'm a potato with social media, so what do I know?

There are people that resteem without commenting, usually is is a hashtag that someone scans through. For me I try to upvote, comment always on posts I read if I want of course. Then sometimes resteem.

I am all in for new services. I know what you mean if I do a post then come across something I want to resteem sometimes I wait because I want mine on top.
