32 Of The Most Beautiful Words In The English Language

in #itsonlywords5 years ago

According to some random people on twitter. The question is though, has anyone used these words in the first quarter of 2019?

Fun fact: I have a red line telling me the dictionary Google Chrome is using cannot find a total of 10 of these words.

And looking down the list, I can tell you right now (the query is running) I will certainly not be on the list this week!

This is comments/replies only from the 1st of January 2019 - 31st March 2019 and if the comment contains more than one of this words (unlikely!?), it is only counted as one point.

Stolen from buzzfeed.com, here are the words that will score you a point this week:

Aquiver: Quivering, trembling.
Mellifluous: A sound that is sweet and smooth, pleasing to hear.
Ineffable: Too great to be expressed in words.
Hiraeth: A homesickness for a home you can't return to, or that never was
Nefarious: Wicked, villainous, despicable.
Somnambulist: A person who sleepwalks.
Epoch: A particular period of time in history or a person's life.
Sonorous: An imposingly deep and full sound.
Serendipity: The chance occurrence of events in a beneficial way.
Limerence: The state of being infatuated with another person.
Bombinate: To make a humming or buzzing noise.
Ethereal: Extremely delicate, light, not of this world.
Illicit: Not legally permitted.
Petrichor: The pleasant, earthy smell after rain.
Iridescent: Producing a display of rainbow-like colours.
Epiphany: A moment of sudden revelation.
Supine: Lying face upwards.
Luminescence: Light products by chemical, electrical, or physiological means.
Solitude: a state of seclusion or isolation.
Aurora: dawn.
Syzygy: an alignment of celestial bodies.
Phosphenes: the light and colours produced by rubbing your eyes.
Oblivion: the state of being unaware of what is happening around you.
Ephemeral: lasting for a very short time.
Incandescence: light produced by high temperatures.
Denouement: the resolution of a narrative.
Vellichor: the strange wistfulness of used bookshops.
Eloquence: the art of using language in an apt, fluent way.
Defenestration: the act of throwing someone out of a window.
Sonder: the realization that each passerby has a life as vivid and complex as your own.
Effervescence: bubbles in a liquid.
Cromulent: appearing legitimate but actually being spurious.

I don't think I've scored a single point but I hope someone has because I'll have to write about something else if not.

Waiting.......

Query has been running for 17 minutes now (Sorry arcange!)

What else can I talk about whilst the data is being collected?

Oh yes, another 8000+ steps today, but I will be posting my @actifit stuff on @zapncrap (today's) from now on. I don't think it's fair to take auto-votes for completely different content. Yeah, I suck at Steem.

Game of Thrones was alright, I guess. What was it, 6 deaths, 3 sets of breasts - Pretty weak but I'm sure the death count will improve soon enough. Did anyone else think Snow and his queen were off to find some food for the dragons? Maybe there were until Snow decided he has other plans. If i was that dragon, I would have barbecued him instead of watching him screw my mother.

BEOS. Who's being rained on at present due to staking Bitshares? It took a little while to go through the steps but I am the proud owner of approximately 4000 BEOS. There are about 80 days of rain left, and so if you have some BTS sitting there and doing nothing, then why not stake them for some BEOS tokens?

And the results are in!

.... 41 minutes later.

Is this the Steem smart cookie list?

Well done to the first five - @allyinspirit, @veryspider, @lucylin, @valued-customer, and @hlezama.

Feel free to tag someone you recognize who would be happy to see themselves here using 'beautiful words'.

Cheers!

Asher

I am a normal person so don't expect to be on a list using words like that. Spelling them is hard enough and those aren't in my lingo or at the tip of my tongue. I am educated and there are a few words that I know, but obviously there are loads I have never heard of before.

Hmmm @abh12345. While I've been told I have a pretty good vocabulary, I only see 3 or 4 of these words I might use in a sentence. And while familiar with a number of them, there are plenty of others here I'd have to look up in a dictionary, before I used them in a sentence ... 😉

That was fun!

P.S. Definitely want to avoid getting into a defenestrating state of mind ...

Hi @roleerob

You are one who I thought could make this list, but it wasn't to be.

A defenestrating state of mind is certainly one to be avoided! Thanks for stopping by :)

yays im smrt!!! im a smrt spder!!!!! wheeeeeeeeeee \o/

dances a spider dance

Nicely done @veryspider! Very impressive vocabulary, if you are using these words much. 👍

You are a very smart spider! Bravo!

Thank feck I am actually on the list, will need to try harder to get higher!

Vellichor: the strange wistfulness of used bookshops.

I think people just make stuff up to put on lists.

That has to be made up. It's ridiculous. It sounds like dried chimongery on a curtain.

You didn't score with this one? pffft.

Good man! If there was ever a list that I'd score -1 on :)

I'm impressed at the high scorers on this one!

Absolutely! A resounding victory for the ladies this week!

It is indeed, especially that Lucy one!! ;0)

Argghhh, my eyes!

I'm a bit lost in space :D

3 pairs of breast and oblivious to the fact that his screwing his sister. Cringe.... Also I'm glad not all the above words are perposterous!

Well he knows now, so if he doesn't say anything and carries on screwing her, then we got a problem :)

Thanks for the spoiler!!!! But also, What if they already conceived a special needs kid!!! Everyone says Cersi and Jamie's kids were fine, but we all know Joff was special needs!!!

Caught up!! He looks like he would still do it! LOL

Man! one of these days you'll have a contest that I might be able to score! Sigh looks like I'll just have to get off my butt and engage more! Its my only hope :-)

I actually know most of those words (really!), but thanks for my new favorite:

syzygy! That is just awesome. I'm gonna find a way to incorporate that into a comment one day just for fun!

Ha! Yeah, I'm never gonna get a million words anyway. I meant more comments, more negagement in general. You know, the whole purpose of the league.

It really annoys me that I never see my score cause I'm not in the top whatever %, So I guess I'm gonna have to change my ways!

By the way, Is there a way to see ones scores if you don't make the weekly list? :-) If you tell me I promise I'll still try to improve my engagement anyway :-0

One day :) But yes, it does help if you put plenty of words on the blockchain. Saying that though, a million words wouldn't score me a point here!

Since I wasn't going to make it on your swear list, I'd hoped I'd rank higher on this one. Some of those words I know but would never use, and others I found out while reading this what they meant. Others, though, are far more common and are probably the ones I've used. A whopping total of three times. :)

3 times more than me, and most of the community it seems :)

I'm glad to see yourself and some other familiar names here.

Oh. That sleepwalk name would take a long time for me to know offheard

Pretty sure I have never written or spoken that word before (and that goes for plenty more up there!)

Native speaker, and same here!

Beautiful in their rarity, makes sense :)

This may sound like an excuse, but I prefer to keep language as simple as possible. I think time abroad is partly to do with it - simple/ straightforward language and a smile goes further for the most part :)
