30 Day Challenge Fall, Day 7, Sunday Reflections

To paraphrase Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling, "Sunday is the best day of the week. Why's that? no post" This is still true, here in Canada, Sunday is a day when the mail does not arrive, well email, but not the physical kind.

However, just about everything else is open for business. This was not the case when I was growing up in Alderwood in the late 40s and the 50s. The only thins doing business then were churches, parks, police and ambulance services, some restaurants and movie houses but little else of a commercial nature.

In those early years, my mother was a homeworker and Dad drove a streetcar for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). He often worked on holidays and weekends. It was not until he earned enough seniority to have more say in his off days and vacations, that he was able to book Christmas day off.

Today, standing on our front deck and looking down the street, I can see those early days, clearly. Childhood was a time of play, happiness, love, and just plain old fun. There was no television. No one owned a computer or even desired one. Our only phone was attached to the wall. I did not have to trek over hill and ale to get to school, though, the school was only a few short blocks from home.

Now, Sunday is not very different from any other day of the week. It is a day off form many but for others, like my friend, who has Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays off, Sunday is simply another day. I am not saying that life was better back then, nor I am I saying it is better now. It has simply changed, for the better or for the worst, perhaps some of both.
