Once a Soldier, Always a Soldier
Heavy sweat trickled down their whole body. One soldier already created a disgusting puddle beside him. Some were already numb from the pain they felt on their arms and legs. It’ll only be a matter of time before their spirits were broken.
“Mind over matter.”
The senior officer roared.
The words ringed on their ears. They must keep on going. It’ll end soon. Just three more hours to go. Endure!
“Are you a quitter?”
“SIR! NO, SIR!”
They responded in almost a screech.
“Don’t quit. Go!”
In unison, they yelled, “Don’t Quit! As things go wrong, as sometimes they will…”

Having been there (many years ago) in the British Army doing officer basic training (a soldier's year's training in 10 weeks), I remember. In gas mask drills we were afraid of drowning in the sweat trapped inside. Releasing the sweat was a serious no-no!
Your story brought it back very vividly. It was tough.
