Something in music: the origin

One night at a trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had scribbled down more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal’s about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those same terms could be applied to music: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. And the rest is history…

‘Something’ in Music 377

Something Old

Our “something old” this edition is the classic cut “Til I Hear It from You” first recorded by the American alt-rock group the Gin Blossoms. The draft of the song was initially co-written with Marhsall Crenshaw and it was the lead single off the Empire Records soundtrack back in 1995.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new track titled “8-Bit Dragon” by the independent act known as Heramesh. Based in Montreal, Québec, the Canadian act notes that this cut is actually “a remix of a harp song by Taryn Boudreau.” Heramesh’s signature sound is a mix of multiple music genres including EDM, psytrance, techno, and trance.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the song “You Are The Sunshine In My Life” written and first recorded by American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder in 1973. This “rough cover” is by Greenwich, New York-based singer, songwriter and musician Dianna Cristaldi. It was taped in the summer of 2014. In a message on social media Cristaldi said it is “for All the ‘Sunshines’ in my life.”

Something Blue

Last but least, our “something blue” this time is the track titled “Parkersburg Blues.” It was co-written by Nashville veterans Eric Brace, Peter Cooper and Thomm Jutz. The song originally appeared on their 2017 album Profiles in Courage, Frailty, and Discomfort.

If you’d care to hear what Brace and Jutz are doing now, look for their new album titled Simple Motion. (Need more? Check out a full review of this new release right here!)
