SEC - S17W6 | "Saving humanity: Progeria, children should not rapidly age"

Today I wanted to invite you to this challenge by Scouts y sus Amigos Community:
Unfortunately there are many different diseases in the world and some of them definitely very dangerous and cause the life of our relatives and friends.Often it comes suddenly and we in some cases can not do anything against it.
Today I will tell you about a condition that can happen in any family and does not need to be in your family history it is just a mutation in gene, that can happen and can distort the whole life of any child and it is a big tragedy for the whole family.

Progeria disease or syndrome is a condition that makes a child to age rapidly and usually they die at the age of 13-14.
This condition is very rare and appears 1 case in 4 million of newborn worldwide.Like I mentioned before it is not something that can bring transmitted from our parents or grandparents.
It is a gene defect that gives the instruction to make a protein called Lamin A, this protein plays an important role to form the shape of nucleus within cell and a foundation for the membrane supporting cells. The altered protein is instable and causes a damage of nucleus making the cells die prematurely
When a child is born there is no external characteristic of this disease, so children have normal features of a healthy baby and parents may not notice anything wrong, because till age of two years baby is growing normally and mentally.
Starting with age of 2 y.o. there are first signs like:
- children growing very slow and usually have short statue
- they start loosing hair and become bald
- the long bones of arms and legs stop growing and the joints become stiff, that is limiting the movement in joints
- skin becomes wrinkly like in old age
- loss of hearing and eyesight
- bones become fragile and tend to break
These are all symptoms that we develop when we get older like over 60s which is then all right after living few decades and enjoying our youth, we then slowly getting older.
It is hard for parents to see how they little sweet children getting older like day by day. The worst part is that the children do not have any learning disability, they realise everything and know that they are getting older. They can see and feel the reaction of society and people around when they are among others and of course, they suffer mentally from that.
Those children with progeria live short life and the main cause of death is atherosclerosis or thickening and hardening of arteries, that loose elasticity and also the lumen of arteries are blocked with plaques. Those conditions we can see again in old ages, when people develop angina and heart attack.
Due to the disease of arteries the children suffer heart attack, stroke and live not longer than 13-14 years.
Nowadays there is no cure but there are some medication in treatment tests that are:
- improving the flexibility of vessels
- improve bone structure
- improve hearing
- gaining weight
Those trials help to increased the lifetime to approximately 20 years.
No children should age so quickly and suffer from old age symptoms, they need to experience and enjoy the world and maybe to do something that will leave a significant impact on this planet.
There is a Progeria Reseasrch Foundation that is working together worldwide and searching for remedy for these children. I am leaving the link to the website you might find it interesting and learn more about those brave children.
If I had a wish to eradicate one disease I would choose this one Progeria so that children and families could enjoy their life.

Thank you very much for such a wonderful content. I took a while to read this article because it is very impactful. I appreciate this knowledge you have share about this disease, and I wish there will be a remedy to eradicate such.
Health is wealth, children are indeed the future which they are supposed to stay healthy and enjoy the world and do something impactful to the others however, I pray and believe in miracle.

Yes, that is a hard situation when it is discovered for parents and later for children.
I've seen videos of this man in Ted conferences and it is really amazing.

I also watched some videos of those incredible tough people, the life sometimes can be very tough and those little people show that there is much more things around that we can enjoy and not complain.
Oh yes I have heard of this disease and it is not at all pleasant I imagine you see a very strong case for someone who looks like one because it is not something normal or common in life.
Even so as you have explained in the post gives much to learn about this disease as I personally did not know much about it if he had heard previously but did not know so many details itself is good to know this kind of things inform yourself your post for me has been of interest.

Yes, we do not come across this disease so often but it is scary that nobody is on save side and it can happen in the future in any family so it is something that would be good to have the solution how to prevent it. Thank you for reading.
