Meaning of Terrorism and the Race Requirement

in #writing6 years ago (edited)

Recently Mark Anthony Conditt committed suicide by blowing himself up in his car, ending a weeks long string of seemingly random bombings, which killed two and injured more. But some in the media can’t help notice that he’s NOT being called a terrorist. On one side, the argument is that he has killed and is terrifyingly terrorizing the public and filling them with terror, and thusly must be labeled a terrorist; AND that the only reason he isn’t being labeled as such is because he isn’t “brown” or of foreign descent. On the other side, one might view it is either denial in a racial double standard, or as simply a situation of definitions, and that “terrorism” as a term is relegated to foreign groups bent on destabilizing democracy in general, or specifically America.

What side do you fall on and why? Is it a race thing? Is that just a knee jerk reaction? What is terrorism?

the definition of Terrorism remains the same all over, even to you and i, but individual countries have come to use it at there own disposal to mean what they want it to be, i agree totally with your point. we(humanity) still have a long way to by making sure things are called by its name. looking at it too diplomatically, those who do this random bombings are psychologically troubled people so calling them a terrorist is far from the truth.

Terrorism is, in the broadest sense, the use of intentionally indiscriminate violence as a means to create terror among masses of people; or fear to achieve a financial, political, religious or ideological aim. So in my opinion even if it is a single individual doing such intentional actions (even if driven by some mental illness) this is called terrorism as per the definition of the term.

Modern day terrorism is almost always a result of imperial foreign policy. So i'd say this has nothing to do with race and more to do with him being an American. Robert Pape's book 'Dying To Win' outlines the fact most terrorists believe in their cause as retaliation against a group that's invaded their homeland.
