Chapter 42

Anyone who has studied the Apache Wars of the late 1800s knows that the Apache have a unique genius for unconventional warfare. With hospitals in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado filled with pink, itchy, wheezing Nazis, Daryl and a small band of his friends took care of the infamous “Dulce Base.” Since they were all Indians, none of them got poison ivy.

They made their way down the shaft, broke through the louvers and had their way. The few healthy guards that remained were easily overcome in a brief firefight. Once inside they moved daringly and methodically like rats in a maze. From the central work room Greaves, Thorny, and One Flare had discovered, they traced the halls and passages to uncover offices, storage rooms, file cabinets, entrances, and so forth, picking off the occasional opposition with laser precision all along the way.

Their radios crackled back and forth with the Athabaskan tongue of the windtalkers that had defeated Germany and Japan. Apache and Navajo are similar languages of the Athabaskan group that made it easy for Daryl's mixed team to adapt their own version of of the WWII code. Their long black locks swept the air with each turn like the manes of wild stallions while their weapons swept the base of vermin. Once they retrieved some choice booty and exited their escape route, they torched the place.

Most of the men with Daryl had similar professional experience and were handy at improvising things that go BOOM. Everything they needed was right there inside. Outside, some strange but ephemeral puffs of smoke rose over the hills and canyons, and then disappeared.

While Daryl and his team were taking down the Dulce Base, Carrie and her band were on stage in Albuquerque at a UNM gig doing an angry Navajo version of “Smash It Up” by The Damned.
