Chapter 33

Meanwhile, in Dulce, Greaves was getting a report from his Jicarilla friend Daryl.

“Yeah, that truck you describe, we saw it come in. About 3 days ago.”

“Where’d it go?”

“It was pretty late at night and dark. Hard to say. But, you know, a lot of weird stuff goes in and out of here.”

“Surely, somebody must see this stuff come and go.”

“It’s not as easy as all that.”

“What do you mean?”

“You know, sometimes things come in here and just disappear. Sometimes they leave like they came out of nowhere. A lot of strange flying things. They go into the mesa.”

Strange flying thing at....

“Archuleta Mesa?”

“Yeah.”

“My friends and I really need to know what happened to that truck.”

“That mesa, it’s not a good place. We don’t mess with them and they don’t mess with us.”

“What if we wanted to get inside and have a look?”

“No one here would go with you, even if it’s possible. You know, we don’t even know where the real entrance to that place is. We go up there to the top, we hunt all around here, go camping, we’ve never seen any kind of entrance. It’s like all of a sudden you see a jeep, or a truck, and you don’t know where it came from. Other times it comes in and you don’t know where it went.”

“Weren’t you ever curious, Daryl? I mean, you, you’ve been in the scariest and most secret stuff a guy can face.”

Daryl laughed modestly and then held up his finger to make a point, “That scary stuff was all scary stuff I understood. This stuff is weird,” he added shaking his head.

“What if I was to bring Thorny and One Flare up here?”

“Oh, them? How they doin’?”

“Guess.”

Daryl threw back his head and laughed. “Like that, huh?”

“Well?”

“I helped train those boys,” he answered with affection. And concern.

“I did too.”

“You know, this isn’t normal stuff. Even our medicine men are wary of that shit. It’s not like normal medicine. It is dark, and dark, not even normal darkness. But, hey, it’s from your world. Maybe you get it. But no Indian from around here is gonna go in there with you.”

“So?”

“I better talk to the elders. It could create a problem for our people if anyone goes in there. You know, Delta Force tried to take that place in ’79. That caused problems for us and we had nothing to do with it.”

“They stormed it. We’d be invisible.”

Daryl chortled. “I’m sure you would be….”
