Chapter 17

“Pull up here. A valet’ll park this for you.”

“The Luxor? You want me to just pull up to the Luxor in this jalopy and us reeking like three day old fish.”

“They know me here.”

Frank shook his head. “Doc, you get more interesting by the minute.”

“What? I used to work here.”

Frank and Melissa stared incredulously.

“OK. OK. I can’t stand academia, so I quit for a while and took a job here as a floor manager until the SDSU gig came along. They were people I could work with.”

“The Luxor. A giant pyramid. Well that just figures. I would’ve thought Circus Circus was more your vintage.”

Faro frowned at him. “Anyone have a better idea?”

“Why not just some cheap, seedy motel?”

“We’ll have better privacy and security here for what we have to do. They’re expecting me. I called before we left.”

“Oh that’s great. A call I’m sure was tapped. Privacy? They’ll know exactly where we’ve come.”

“Which is more or less what they’d expect with a couple million burning a hole in your pocket. Had you gone to a seedy motel, now that would have been suspicious.”

The valets looked perplexed as Frank piloted the old heap and its trailer under the canopy. Just then a rotund middle-aged man named Provenzano stepped out.

“Mr. Provenzano!” exclaimed Faro embracing the man warmly.

“Hey, hey, Paisan!” he joked, slapping his back affectionately. “Call me Rico. You don’t work here anymore.” He referred to a shortening of his first name, Enrico.

“OK. Rico.” The professor chuckled. “It seems to strange.”

The valets by now were catching on.

“Put my friends’, uh, ‘SUV’ here in the special parking garage.” He tipped the valet himself, and as Faro reached into his own pocket, Rico made a dismissive gesture that stopped him. Faro shrugged his shoulders.

“I’ve got two adjoining suites arranged for you, but don’t worry, there’s three bedrooms between them.”

“You are too kind, Mr. P. I mean, Rico.”

“Not at all. Not at all. We’ve missed you around here. Honest, truly impeccably honest floor managers are hard to come by these days.”

“I would think that goes with the territory,” said Melissa.

Rico threw back his head and laughed. “Unfortunately, Mrs. er….”

“Shorley. Melissa Shorley.”

“I’m Frank.”

“Nice to meet both of you. And like I was saying, unfortunately, you’re right. It does.”

He placed his hand gently in the small of her back as she entered, followed by Georgeann and then the men.

“Why don’t you guys check in and get cleaned up before lunch. You smell like a bad Taleggio,” he added playfully.

“Hahaha! That’s putting it mildly.”
