Frightmare Mansion - Chapter 29 - First day of school

Chris expertly swerves into the school parking lot like some big-time race car driver. I immediately notice everyone on campus seems to stop in their tracks just to gawk.
"Chris, why is everyone staring at us?"
"They're all wondering who the gorgeous girl in my car is."
"Awww, that was very sweet, thank you."
He opens the door for me, as I step out, two dorks bump into each other. One of them falls into the fountain and everyone starts laughing. I really felt sorry for the one in the fountain.
"My God, that poor guy!" I remark.

"That's Dory Finkman. He's the only one of my friends that didn't make it to the park Sunday to meet you. Hold on."
Chris dashes over to help his awkward friend from the fountain. Finkman feels around his face and panics, "My glasses! My glasses!" Chris finds them in the fountain and wipes them dry on his own shirt.
"Here you go buddy." Chris places the bulky black horn-rimmed glasses back on his friend's face. Finkman adjusts them properly on his nose. A band-aid on his nose is lifting up, he pulls it off revealing every teenager's worse nightmare. A big red pimple ready to pop.

Chris puts his hand on his wet shoulder, "Are you alright?"
"Yeah - yeah, I'm okay."
"I want you to meet Skylar, you missed her on Sunday."
"Skylar, nice name, I'm Dory, Dory Finkman," he puts his soaked hand out.
He notices my hesitation to shake.
"I'm sorry, what am I thinking, I don't want to get you wet."
"That's okay." I just wave at him.
"Yeah, I didn't make it because my mom made me stay home to wash my underwear and sheets. I had a little accident-"
Chris breaks in, "Uh Finkman to much information guy."
"Oh, sorry."

I'm wondering if this guy is for real. I mean he's your typical nerd. Shabby clothes, shorter than me. Potbellied and a slouched posture. But this says a lot about Chris, who's handsome, intelligent and a great athlete. He's not even concerned about what others think about his friendship with Finkman.

"Dory, can you please show Skylar the office, I have to report to the coach ASAP about the big game coming up."
"Sure, I can do that. Come on, follow me."
Chris takes my hand, "You're in good hands with Dory. I'll meet you at lunch in the cafeteria."
He gives me a nice kiss on the lips. Oh my god, I thought I was going to faint! He caught me by total surprise after a lack of a goodnight kiss on our first date last night.

The bell rings and kids flood the hallways, we make our way to the office. As I follow Finkman, spit wads and rubber bands bounce from his head. Bigger guys thump his ears from behind, oh I know how that hurts. Some sound out his name, "Finkman!" Someone throws an half-empty cup of soda at him. He just moves forward without a word. I felt so awful about how they all treated him. We turn the corner and the office is just ahead.

"Here's the office Skylar."
"Thank you Dory, I really appreciate your help. I'm going to shake your hand even if it's wet."
He adjusts his thick glasses as we shake, the smile he expressed was something I don't think I will ever forget.

I talk to the lady at the desk and she has me sign some papers and hands me my class schedule. Cool, science class first, Luckily I find the science building pretty quick and I flow into science class with the other students. I take a seat, but hear someone behind me, I turn and recognize Mia, one of Chris's friends I met at the park. She's a tacky fashion plate at school too with all the jewelry and big bracelets. Her gum chewing is absolutely classic, darn she even just blew a bubble.
"Hey Skylar sit at my table!"
"Okay!"
I take a seat next to her, "Hi Mia, I'm so glad to see someone I know."
"Hi, want some gum?"
"Um - uh, is it okay to chew gum in here?" looking up at the teacher.
In her cool Brooklyn accent, " I'm teacher's pet for Mr. Berry. I can do what I want in here,"" she hands me a couple of sticks of gum. "You're going to have it made in here, an easy "A". Listen, just follow my lead and you can't lose."
"Wow, thanks," I'm so glad I met all of Chris's friends this is going so much more smoother than I could have ever have imagined.

After class I find my locker and have no problem with the combination dial, I toss in my science text book into the opened locker. So far everything has gone amazing at school today. I check my class schedule for my next class, and hooray! It's my art class next. I haven't seen Chris all morning and wonder if we have any classes together.

I scan the room numbers trying to find my art class as I slowly move through the ocean of students. Wait, there's Chris up ahead about to walk into a class room - suddenly a pretty tanned girl, with long blond hair cuts me off and stops him, she pulls him aside. I stop dead in my tracks. I can feel my heart sink, and my day going down the tubes fast!
