Man of the Night

in #writing7 years ago

A man in a leather coat walked through the night.

Yellow lamplight was dull upon the street.

A pause. A scratch, and then a fizz; a wisp of smoke.

Inhale. Exhale. More smoke. And he was off again.

It was a hurried pace, and the scent of sweet yeast was in the air.

The pastry cafe was scorned, for the man kept walking.

He walked through the dark, step after step.

He stopped, and began to speak. A voice near him answered back.

A conversation was had, the two voices speaking to each other.

But it began to grow tense. He threw a spark on the pavement, and his boot squashed the cigarette.

The voices grew louder, and then they stopped.

The man turned away from the opposing voice, and began walking, faster and faster.

He climbed a flight of stairs, and then another, taking flight after flight, until the top.

He finally stopped, panting, and covered in sweat. He looked up at the moon and the stars, and then leapt off the building.

He was gone.

Nice. Fast, sharp, and open ended.

Meowww! That's how they do it, don't they? Kittens or cats on the street act like they have to stop and greet their fellow cats. There will be some exchange of messages and then they would bid goodbye and off they run! Jump! Or climb up some buildings and houses! They would disappear like Flash.

I can relate because I have a kitten that I rescued 5 days ago from the street. Now, she's super playful and would explore every part of our house. She was able to adapt easily and she's not afraid of people. She's a very sweet lil monster. Here's a photo of her :-)
