BACK ON THE HUSSLE, HUH?

I am told that Simon Peter, a professional fisherman with several years experience, was in that boat when a turbulent wind arose. Him and all his men paddled and paddled frantically, but they could not negotiate the boat to shore. What a shame! Normally it takes about twenty rows per minute to move a boat fairly speedily; but they hit hundred to no avail. They seemed doomed. Meanwhile, a tired Jesus was fast asleep on the cushion inside the cabin. Whether to get him up to die with his eyes wide open, or to have him do something… I’m not sure why they went to wake Jesus.

As pa a man who had been sleeping out of tiredness, Jesus may have been hard to wake; or may have dragged his foot; or may have rebuked the intruder... Well, ultimately, stepped forth upon their persistence and rebuked the tempest and all was calm. That didn’t mean, though, that the boat magically appeared at the shore, the amazed disciples still had to paddle. Now, as simple as it ought to be, they rowed and rowed, until they arrived.

Against this background, I suspect that all laws… of physics, of motion, of navigation… of chemistry, biology, and engineering… of business and accounting… all function within the ambit of a pre-set divine order. Once, for some reason, that order is impeded, all our human laws and contraptions don’t apply. We have no business doubling or tripling our efforts; no business rowing two thousand times in a minute; no business losing sleep and saying ‘maga must pay!’... We simply need to go kneel by the Master’s cushion, and implore Him relentlessly to restore that primordial calm, so that our gentle efforts can yield our desired results.

When it's Monday, you begin to see posts like ‘get rich or die tryin’, ‘not sleeping till I’m rich’, ‘if you aint talking money, then don't talk to me … all these clichés won’t bring us to the dusk of our dreams. But if we beckon on the Master, and He keeps the sea on which we sail calm, we’ll sleep when we should, work when we should, play when we should, and still realize all our dreams. There is absolutely no shame in doing our best, and acknowledging God’s omnipotence when we can go no further.
