Death Unworthy Of A Tear

The first thought that came to his head as he saw his father lying in a casket was how peaceful he looks. How the gunshot at the back of his head remained hidden was another one. His father’s black hair appeared untouched and they positioned his face in a way that made him smile that if no one knew any better, they’d think he passed away from a natural cause and not from his lost war with depression that came as a result of him being diagnosed with lung cancer.

The tears of his step mom and little sister threatened to break him but he had made a decision to be strong like his big sister Jane. He stole a glance at her a few meters away from him. She appears to be holding herself together but it occurred to him that it was she that their father’s demise was hitting the most.

At least, it was she who came all the way from the university to take proper care of him when the cancer was at its critical stage, putting her dream of being a dentist on hold for the time being. Peter remembered how his father encouraged her to always give her best, citing her as a typical example of what he and his little sister should aspire for. She was his angel, he would always say. He wasn’t jealous as he understood and respected the bond between father and daughter. Why did you have to end it this way, dad? He sobbed.

Jane cleaned her face with her a small face towel, she wondered where the single tear was coming from, not sure. It was not because of the man lying in the casket. She carefully scanned the faces of her family until she found Peter. She felt like telling him the truth about the devil he idolises more than anyone, the monster they called father but she does not want to raise any suspicion.

She closed her eyes and her mind drifted back to her moment with her father as he got weaker day by day because of his cancer, but it still didn’t stop his sick infatuation with her. Being alone with him, he moved closer to her and put her hand on her back. “Stop,” she almost shouted, standing up from her seat. She has always wondered why she wasn’t adopted by another man.

“You are going to deny a dying man of his final wish?” He grinned devilishly as he has always done.

She was use to shutting her mind to the things he had always wanted to do to her, always praying he would stop but even as his death was imminent, the stupid man still will not give up. Something was bound to give as she needed him out of her life and she was impatient for the cancer to do the job.

He deserved to have a better role model, she thought as she looked at Peter. Thankfully, having to shoot a depressed man in the head and convincing the world that he did it to himself was pretty easy.

Thank for reading through the tale of man living a double life and a lady’s desperate need to end his abuse.
