This is my review of Alice in chains "Down in a hole" MTV Unplugged version
Tonight I want to write about one of my favorite songs by Alice in Chains and it is "Down in a Hole". this version of the song is different they performed it unplugged but you can also find its older version which was heavier. but here we go with the Unplugged MTV show version.
The song starts with a beautiful acoustic fingerpicking section performed by Jerry Cantrell, at 0:20 with bassline and drum fills rest of the band start playing and both Jerry and Layne Staley starts singing with a beautiful harmony in their vocals. and each one of them adding nice heartful melodies separated which makes it really beautiful, I love the bass line's melodies too, it is performed by Mike Inez, I like how each one of the members adding their own musical style to this piece, the vocals are awesome as they sing with a tragical tone and the way they add pressure in some sections and in other sections they sing softly but still full of emotions.
with another drum fills by Sean Kinney the song goes to the first climax and Layne starts singing solo with pressure in his vocals, that's really beautiful and we can easily feel the lyrics, at 1:43 both Jerry and Layne singing beautiful and powerful chorus vocals and in some parts, it is like they give space to each other and share the vocals with each other between solo singing and harmony singing, for the second verse Layne is singing alone and then they go to the second bridge and both start singing perfectly, at 3:43 Jerry start the verse with a soft and deep tone and Layne is singing answer vocals, I really enjoy listening to this part, it is full of emotions that it is not easy to describe, in this MTV unplugged concert there is also Scott Olson that plays second acoustic guitar and he is an additional performer, I like the melodies he added at 4:23, it adds a good feeling along with vocals, they keep going on with the last chorus so powerful and they keep switching vocals between both vocalists, I like that part when they sing I like to fly .... but my wings ... also the drum performance in that section is really amazing and Layne is singing that last vocal note different than the first chorus, performing high notes with much power and pressure. the song slowly goes to the end with soft acoustic guitar picking.
