WWE Superstars Who Are (or were) Oh So Close to Being A Grand Slam Champion

in #wrestling8 years ago

A WWE Grand Slam Champion is someone who has won a championship in all levels of the promotion (World, secondary, tag team, tertiary). Under the current format only seven have claimed this status.

Current Grand Slam Champions

  • Kurt Angle
  • Eddie Guerrero
  • The Miz
  • Daniel Bryan
  • Big Show
  • Chris Jericho
  • Edge

Under the original format, the Grand Slam Champions were Shawn Michael, Triple H, Kane, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, Rob van Dam, Booker T, Jeff Hardy, JBL, Christian, and Big Show. To be recognized under the current format, all except Kurt, Eddie, and Show would need the United States Championship.

I doubt these seven will be the only Grand Slam Champions, but here are just a few Superstars who are incredibly close:

Wrestlers Who Are Close (Title needed)

John Cena (Intercontinental Championship)
Seth Rollins (Intercontinental Championship)
Zack Ryder (WWE World/Universal Championship)
Roman Reigns (Intercontinental Championship)
Sheamus (Intercontinental Championship)
CM Punk (WWE United States Championship)
Kofi Kingston (WWE World/Universal Championship)
Alberto del Rio (WWE Tag Team Championship)
Randy Orton (WWE United States Championship)
Santino Marella (WWE World/Universal Championship)
Dean Ambrose (WWE Tag Team Championship)
Rey Mysterio (WWE United States Championship)

The vast majority of these are unlikely to happen. In fact, the only ones that I would think are ever going to happen are John Cena, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and Sheamus. The fact of the matter is with so many of these Superstars will never fall (Randy) or rise (Kofi) to a point on the card to where they will win these titles (Though Kofi deserves it). Some (Punk, Rey, and Santino) will likely never return to the company. Even if they did, that's no guarantee they would be given the opportunity.

An addendum: There is a bit of confusion regarding Dolph Ziggler's title reigns; however, I believe it is Dolph's World Tag Team title reign that doesn't count toward the Grand Slam.

Ziggler has been a World Heavyweight Champion (which has since unified with the WWE Championship), the United States States Champion, and Intercontinental Champion.

Cena going after the IC title in order to win the one belt he hasn't won, and to become a Grand Slam champion, would actually be a nice program, and a way to bring prestige to the IC belt.

If Corbin wins it at Mania, he could feud with Cena over it.
