Major Incident due to DDoS attacks: steemyy.com offline for around 20-30 minutes

What is Denial-of-service attack?

In computing, a denial-of-service attack is a cyber-attack in which the perpetrator seeks to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users by temporarily or indefinitely disrupting services of a host connected to the Internet.

Today, around July 28, 2020 · 10:56 AM UTC, https://steemyy.com can't be reached for around 20 to 30 minutes. As the server sits behind cloudflare, it shows 522 errors.

According to the mail update from CloudCone, it appears to be DDOS attacks:

Luckily, the issue was mitigated quickly and according to Status Page, the case is resolved around July 28, 2020 · 12:10 PM UTC.

To avoid the downtime of a service, we can add load balancer in front of it, then route the traffic to the least load server. If a server goes down, we still have the service up and running.

This is a bit trickier for Databases, as at some point, we will have a centralised place to keep the origin data of truth. We can, however, use master-master or master-slave replication to improve the durability.
