How Steemy is Whaleshares - A Guide for Steemians

in #whaleshares6 years ago

Looks like Steemit, must be Steemit

This is often heard on the Discord server. When you open the website, it looks like Steemit, and it does. On the other hand what is wrong with that? There are many platforms that look alike because they use the same software, the same way. And that is where Whaleshares is different. Whaleshares does use (part of) the same software, but in a different way.

You won't say a Ford is a Toyota, just because they are build on the same principle of having 4 wheels, an engine, steeringwheel and some other parts, right?

On a more personal note, I like the website as it is. The platform is about content, so content should have all the focus. Visitors should not be distracted by a platform theme with wild colors and/or images.

So How is Whaleshares different

First of all, Whaleshares started out as a community. That is before there was a Whaleshares blockchain. The blockchain came later on. With Steemit, it went the other way around. Second, the community is important. There is a team of people who started it, a team of people who are developing it, but there is not one person who decides everything, there is not one person who holds the majority of the shares. This platform is not run by CEO's.

There are live-events on discord where members are updated on what is happening and what is planned, and even more important, can ask questions, make suggestions. These events are weekly, be there and you will know what 'the community is important' means.

Second, the software is used differently, which means the platform follows rules different from Steemit. Let see what that means.

Payout

SteemitWhaleshares
Payout after 7 daysPayout after 14 days
Payout 100% STEEMPOWER,
50/50 STEEMPOWER/SBD, or NONE
Payout 100% WHALESTAKES or NONE

14 days payout scheme seems a long time, but it means there is more time for people to find your post and reward it. Newcomers are often upset by the 100% WHALESTAKES payout and not having a choice. The reason for payout being 100% WHALESTAKES is easy, whaleshares platform is about the community about engaging, about sharing. It is not for quick money. This limitation kind of prevents that.

Show Your Appreciation

SteemitWhaleshares
Upvote,
Resteem
Share&Reward

On Whaleshares Share & Reward is one action. What you reward is immediately shared. This should result in people being more careful about what they share and reward.

Selfvoting

SteemitWhaleshares
Comment or Post, your reward is equal to the reward on any other comment or postPost reward is equal to rewarding other posts. Comments however are treated differently. When you reward your own comment, you will lose 3x the mana that would be used on someone else's comment. And on top of that, you will only be rewarded 1/3 of the reward value.

Needless to say, on the Whaleshares platform, rewarding your own comments is not forbidden, but not promoted either. Personally I wouldn't mind if this were applied to posts as well.

Flagging

SteemitWhaleshares
Flagging takes as much voting power as a regular vote, the damage is equal to vote valueFlagging costs 3x mana of a regular reward and damages only 1/3 of the reward value. This is similar to rewarding your own comments

These rules make it less likely people will start flagging just for fun. You easily lose your mana, and the impact may disappoint you.

Posts After Payout

SteemitWhaleshares
After payout it is still possible to upvote a post. The reward however is lost. After 14 days you are no longer able to reward a post

It happened to me a few times, finding something useful, upvote it and then realize it is way past payout. This won't happen on Whaleshares.

Support

SteemitWhaleshares
Delegation provides the ability to support others by giving them part of your votingpowerThere is no delegation on Whaleshares. Support happens by distributing tokens. These tokens are earned, not bought. The tokens can be used to increase the reward of a post. Tokens are distributed through contests, or as a gift to compensate for work done for the community.

Crypto to Fiat

SteemitWhaleshares
You may have SBD or STEEM in your wallet from post payout, this can be converted into fiat using an exchange. Or you can Powerdown to convert some of your votingpower into SBD and then start the process. You will not have WLS in your wallet directly, you have to Powerdown to convert WHALESTAKES into WLS. Then you can convert it using the Rudex exchange. Or go the other way around, buy some WLS and convert them to WHALESTAKES in your wallet.

Great post @ijmmai! Still trying to get a bit noticed over there but it's difficult.

Hey, that's why you haven't been around that much. I better check whaleshares then. Thank you for this!

Yes that is right, sorry for that. There is more life in the community on whaleshares than here on Steemit. I am still around but pretty busy on discord as well.

You should check it out if you haven't done this already. There is a new signup tool online you could be writing your introduction post in a day. Hope to see you there.

I'm having multiple issues at the same time, for instance my computer doesn't want to work with me all the time, and of course the "where to find an extra hour or two to a day" problem. Yesterday I made it to the point where I validated my e-mail and got stuck with the fact that I don't have a Bitshares account and the fact that I would have had to come up with a convincing introduction post right there and then. I just wanted to look around a bit first.

But hey, some day. Some day. :)

Nah, you don't need a complete introduction. Just say you know me, and that I am driving you crazy because I want you to join. You can also mention your Steemit account so they have an idea of what you are up to.

This signup system is actually pretty neat. There is a team that came up with the idea of Whaleshares and there is a team that is actively building it. In the future, more and more of what is being build will be handed over to the community. There is no Ned or Dan who is going to decide what will happen to the platform, the community will decide on that.

This signup procedure is a first step in handing over de system. We want to verify you are a human being, that is what the bitshares account is for. It may not be perfect but it is something. You can signup at bitshares for free.

Once you have send your request, it will endup in a queue, the top 20 witnesses will take a look at your request and validate it, I am not sure about the exact number but let's say it needs two validations. When that is done, you receive an email with info to create your actual account.

On Whaleshares it is pretty important to use your witness votes correctly so the right people end up in that top 20. There are already great people there, but I hope there is room for my name some day. My witness server seems to be running pretty smoothly so far.

There is another reason for signing up with bitshares. When you win a contest, or get a gift from someone, you will receive tokens, these tokens will be send to your bitshares account. You can then decide to use the tokens to increase the payout of one of your posts.

More and more people from Steemit are coming over. It is a real nice place to be. If you have time to join the Discord server you will have even more fun. Really hope to see you there soon. We could use your humor.

Thank you for this extra explanation. :)

It is good to have friends in high places! :) And when I join, you will definitely be on my witness list! Now I just have to find some extra time.

Once you are infected with the Whaleshares virus, you may just switch platforms instead of needing more time :)

Know that you are welcome at any time. Also know that I can reward you way better over there :)

Did it. I said you forced me. :D

I just noticed you voted for me as witness. YEAH! you made it, great to have you on board. Start writing that introduction post (use the introduceyourself tag), so I can reward you.

lekker bezig ouwe!

I like the overview, using both is the best combo as yet for now!

Excellent summary of the differences. This was helpful!

Thank you. I posted it on whaleshares as well. Didn't expect you to find it here :)

@ijmmai

Hi, whaleshares is about building a community. There is money to earn as well, but that is not the top priority.
WLS is the currency used on whaleshares when you have powered down. The rudex exchange is the gateway to go from WLS to fiat. On other exchanges the currency, if present, will be listed as rudex.WLS.

You can find the market here:
https://market.rudex.org/#/market/RUDEX.WLS_BTS
https://wallet.bitshares.org/#/market/RUDEX.WLS_BTS

Let me know if you have more questions.

If it's not about the money, then what is it about ? You think people really care what others eat for breakfast ? Come on!
Thank You for the info , i will skip this one.
:-)

I could rephrase it in, it is not about money in the first place. Of course people who spend their whole day on writing post and commenting would like to see something in return.

The idea is for people to engage and be part of the platform for a long time, not just write a few pieces, collect your money and leave. By having the 14 days for post payout, and the powerdown in place, people are automatically directed that way.

I have yet to come across another community that has over half its members on Discord server as well.

Will no bad things happen on Whaleshares? I wish that were true, but we are trying very hard to fight it with what we have.

My belief in Whaleshares was (and is) strong enough for me to decide to even become a witness. So am I there for the money, well I hope to get something out of it at some point, but for now I am just investing I guess. Keeping the witness server running comes with costs.

The big difference between Steemit and Whaleshares, is people. Have you ever spoken to a Steemit dev and received an answer? How come the terrible Times Roman font is still in place, despite people have asked so many times for a replacement. How much trouble is that?

Whaleshares members do not hate Steemit. Steemit is not a word you can't say. Because of Steemit, Whaleshares could be build. We learned a lot form being part of Steemit in the first place. And I say we, but I am pretty new to Whaleshares myself. only been around for 2 months, but the whole atmosphere is so much better, I tend to forget to look after my Steemit account. So I apologize for my late response.

The platform is still young. You can join and still be an early bird. The choice is yours.
