Singaporean Salted Egg flavour

Some people don't even eat fish skin just by itself and some other countries don't even know what exactly is the salted egg.. Well, in this very post, I would love to shared with you this weirdly delicious part of my journey in Singapore. One of the most popular Singaporean snacks I had heard of, tried quite a few time but never before in its home country, Singapore's Salted Egg flavoured fish skin!

A salted egg is a Chinese preserved food product made by soaking duck eggs in brine, or packing each egg in damp, salted charcoal

For some of you who may be like 'Eww' when you hear the word fish skin but believe it or not, a great Japanese sushi chef would never throw away the fish skin. There's that special taste on the very thin layer underneath the skin. Most people describe that taste 'Umami', the perfect taste you can't define either it's sweet, sour, spicy, or else. It's just 'Umami' so yes, I think there are some good reasons behind the fish skin eating culture.

Salted Egg flavoured fish skin

I have heard of this combination for such a long.. long time. Thai people love it. Some companies import the product and some even imitate it themselves. Most of the companies usually mention on their products 'Addictive' or even 'Dangerously Addictive'. I tried quite a few times and have to say, it's really the way they say...

There're many brands in Singapore that produce this weirdly delicious Popular Singaporean Snacks. The one we saw a lot around Chinatown where we went to try the signature dish of Singapore, Chilli Crab and Mantou, was this brand called 'Fragrance'. They have a few locations selling souvenirs and gifts in the touristy areas. The other brand I know that's they're so well-known for this Salted Egg flavoured fish skin is 'Irvins'

We got Salted Egg flavoured fish skin by Fragrance (S$8) as it was literally the easiest go get around where we were. Kevin was a bit skeptical at first as he's from the USA, the country where they're not so used to eating both the salted eggs and the fish skin. After a few pieces though, he almost finish the whole entire bag himself.

### Salted Egg flavoured tapioca chips

This one is new to me.. I don't think I had ever before tried tapioca chips. I had just those yummy tapioca pearl drink and I love it! So now, let's give this tapioca chips a go with our Asian style kind of flavour.. We also got it from the same brand in Singapore's Chinatown, Fragrance.

Is Tapioca chips like potato chips? Banana chips? Taro chips? Yam chips? No, it's tapioca chips!

I think it's a bit harder than Lay's potato chips we're all used to. Almost remind me of the texture of banana chips but no sweeter or a bit sour taste. It's actually pretty good with the Salted Egg flavour.

These two are flavourful and have their own unique texture to it. I thought I liked the fish skin more at first but then after a few more of tapioca chips, I couldn't pick. They're both just as weirdly good! and to be honest, it doesn't have to be this brand or the other famous one mentioned earlier, Irvins. We walked around and tried quite at quite a few shops. They're all pretty much the same in term of taste and price such as..

  • Irvins Salted Egg
  • Fragrance
  • The Golden Duck
  • Kaizocool
  • Bee Cheng Hiang
  • East Ocean Teochew Restuarant
  • Tiny Red Dot

Try some when you see one. I love it. I love it a lot!
