Wednesday walk challenge: Inside Saint Ildephonse Cathedral

in #wednesdaywalk5 years ago

Hello and good morning, my dear steemians! I hope you're doing great on this week. Today in this fourth entry to the Wednesday walk challenge (hosted by @tattoodjay) I'll give you a little walk in the insides of Saint Ildephonse Cathedral.

The pictures were taken yesterday March 12th, taking the opportunity of the walk to the phone and internet company to pay the monthly bill. The camera I used was my phone, Motorola G6 Play. My apologies if some pictures are not well focused or not very well taken.

The Cathedral's facade

As I mentioned in the past post, the Cathedral is a XVI century building built some years later of the Spanish Conquest. The stones used for its construction were from the abandoned Mayan city Ichca'anzihó, or T'hó as some historians mentioned; it was built by Mayans who were both Mayan prisoners and recently converted Christians as a sort of tribute.

It has the six doors to enter: two on the left side, of which tone is actually the entry to one of its chapels; one on the right side, located on the Pasaje de la Revolución. And three on the front; of the latter, the middle one is known as the Door of Forgiveness; it opens sometimes on Sundays and on the Holy Week.

When you enter to the Cathedral through either of the front doors, you find people praying to some of the representative figures, including the Virgin of Guadalupe and Christ Redeemer.

When you stop on the middle of the Cathedral's shed, you watch far away the high altar and the Cruxified Christ.

If you walk few more steps and look back, you can find, right over you, the organ, which is played on Sunday masses. You can see it completely once you're near the high altar.

On the high altar you can observe two statues on both sides of its entry. The first one (I guess) is Saint Ildephonse with a child; the second one is the Our Lady of Yucatan, name given to the Virgin of Izamal. In the middle, behind the altar, you can see more close the huge Cruxified Christ figure.

Walking on the left side of the high altar there's a minor altar devoted to the Holy Trinity. Along it you can see the entry to the little chapel devoted to the Black Christ of the Blisters. This chapel in particular always has visitors from many points of the city; on Holy Week you can see how many people pray to him asking him for family's health, love, and also impossible tasks.

On the right side of the high altar there's another one dedicated to Mary, Joseph and, if I'm not wrong, Saint Paul or other apostole. On the left, in a few meters, is the entry to the priests changing room; the area is forbidden to the public.

If you walk out through the door located at few meters of the left front entry of the Cathedral, you enter to its second chapel, which is devoted to the Virgin Mary of the Sorrow.

Once out of the Cathedral, you can walk few meters and see a little building aside the left entry; that building is the Confessional, which is connected to the chapel of the Black Jesus of the Blisters.

I hope you liked this little walk into one of the most ancient churches in Latin America. I'll see if the next Wednesday I can show you the insides of the local university's headquarters or a trip to the Music Palace, or any other cultural event held in my city.

Have a nice day!
