How to improve the quality of your next contribution

This is the fourth part of the series that explains how open source contributors/enthusiasts can make the ideal contributor to the Suggestions category.

The first part hereexplained what the Utopian policies and guidelines are. The Suggestion category guidelines were briefly explained too.

The second part here looked into the Suggestion category guidelines with a little information about the contribution review.

The third part here explains everything that is needed to know about the Github account and Github repository. This is one grey area many users do not understand well and I believe the post has addressed that.

You already published the ideal contribution. What next?

From my experience as a moderator on Utopian, I have seen many contributors with quality contributions every day. All of a sudden you see a drastic drop in the quality level. When a user with top quality contributions struggle to replicate the top height reached before, you know something is wrong.

A number of factors may be responsible for this. These factors will be discussed in this post.

Communication

According to Merriam-webster, Communication is

a process by which information is exchanged between individuals. It is simply the exchange of information. Source

Source

The open source world is not a one-man world. It is a world built on collaboration. People from different background participated in building those huge open source projects you see. A look into the Github repository of those project affirms this statement.

The open source world is dynamic. Any open source project that harbours the dream of being successful must be in constant development. Take Utopian as an example. The platform is not where it used to be a couple of months ago. There have been a lot of changes ranging from new voting bot to many new initiatives. These changes are made with one thing in mind PROGRESS. No open source project wants to be static for long.

Source

The open source world is dynamic and you should be too. You don’t want to be left out. Constant communication is key.

I do advise open source contributors to understand how their favourite open source project work. This involves getting in touch with the open source project community so as to have first-hand information regarding any project update. Most huge open source projects have social media accounts, forum, or community that you can follow for updates regarding the project. Joining the project community will let the contributor know some of the problems encountered by other users of the project. This can be polished into a well-refined idea. Such ideas will mostly have huge importance due to the fact that the contributor has first-hand information about the project.

Imagine a contributor submitting a suggestion using the categories guidelines formulated a year ago. Learning about the new guidelines will come as a surprise to the contributor. There are two things involved in this scenario

  • Lack of communication in the contributor part
  • Utopian constant development

Utopian has policies and guidelines as well as category guidelines and templates. These are constantly developed to meet the new demands and also to curb bad practices. It is imperative that contributors should be in constant communication with Utopian in order to be kept abreast of updates.

The Utopian discord server is a hub for open source enthusiasts, contributors, and other users that intend to learn more about Utopian and the open source world. The discord server equipped with numerous open source targeted channels means you can learn, collaborate with other community members, community managers, citizens, and moderators.

It’s never too late to hop on the open source train.

Moderator feedback

In the past, this was one of the dreaded aspects of Utopian for many contributors. That was the past. This is an improved system and one of the progress made so far. Moderator’s feedbacks are now comprehensive. The moderator feedback can be divided into three parts namely
  • The contribution review
  • How the current contribution could have been better
  • Advice on how to improve future contributions.

The three aspects of a moderator feedback give room for interaction between the contributor and the moderator.

A look at @blockchainstudio interaction with @knowledges feedback here is a typical example of knowledge being shared via communication.

Moderator feedback is there to improve your contribution. You should communicate with the moderator on areas you feel it’s not explanatory enough.

You should also put the feedback into good use to further improve your contribution quality.

Thank you.

Hi @zoneboy!

Thank you for providing this excellent post for contributors and mods alike. When I see the title, I said to myself ''I wanna the how'' and when I read the ''how'' to improvement, I agreed with the point.

I wrote an #Iamutopian post 3 or 4 months about communication. I tilted mine as ''Tips from experience: Communication is essential''. Without a doubt, communication is the key to get information from anywhere. Information carriers such as podcast, youtube videos and other are really good. However, communication with an experienced person is superior.

It's great that the Utopian team members are doing good work in detailed and constructive feedback.
Thanks for the information. Well done!

Please note that while the CM hasn't changed the footer, I am not scoring #iamutopian posts based on the questionnaire. They have their own metric, and that will be the case until we go live with the new guidelines and new questionnaire, which will be comprehensive enough to reflect these types of posts.

Your contribution has been evaluated according to Utopian policies and guidelines, as well as a predefined set of questions pertaining to the category.

Thank you for your review, @tykee! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for mentioning :) Yes, I actually think some moderators should be more involved in communication. I saw some posts where moderators didn't respond to author's question. This shouldn't happen.

I agree with you that such should not happen. However, in some cases the author may have contacted the Moderator on Discord.

I have improved a lot thanks to the critics and suggestions from moderators. But I have reached a point where, to me, the improvements are not easy. The points where I am failing might be obvious for someone else, but I don't know what exactly to change, though I am reading a lot to see what can I learn from other authors.

That's good to hear that you utilized the points in the Moderator feedback to better your contributions. I can see you are an active contributor on Utopian especially in the tutorial and blog category.

I understand your situation where it seems you have corrected every possible mistake and then the moderator find one. This is common with personally written posts. While proofreading the posts, our brain tend to trick us in skipping certain sections. Those sections are easily pointed out by the moderator whose brain sees the post as a new one.

I can see you are working hard further improve yourself by learning from other authors. You can also check utopian.rocks for reviewed posts in your category of interest. You can view the moderator feedback and use it as a tool to better your post.

You can hop into the Utopian discord server and have a chat with other members, community Managers, and Moderators. You can ask questions, learn more about certain tools to improve your contribution.

The improvements may not be seen immediately, but with time it will manifest.

Hey, thank you very much for showing this utopian.rocks! I didn't know about this tool to find other contributions to follow. We learn something new everyday :)
