The values of Filipinos have been looked upon by foreigners as a weakness instead of strength due to the nature of how they may be abused and manipulated due to these values. But values are what make up a certain nation both in growth and unity. Some may see that Filipino values as a hindrance to the growth of the country and yet others may say that this is what makes the country powerful.

Values is defined by the way the people live their life as an influence of one’s culture. Philippines, having been an archipelago, has not become a hindrance towards having a single values system throughout the country.

However, for better understanding of these concepts, I would take a look at the numerous values of the Filipinos and how they might be influential to the growth of a person and the country at large.

  • Hospitality;

The Filipinos are known to be accommodating to their countrymen. Filipinos would invite their visitors  and offer them treats such as drinks  and snacks. They could also go the extremes as to give up the comfort of their own bedrooms for their guests and to the point of sleeping on floor just to ensure that their guests are comfortable. Filipinos could go as far as borrowing in other to offer their  visitor the best service.

  • Industry and Hard work;

Filipino’s zeal for hard work, which is a mark of a highly competitive spirit, is propelled by the passion for advancement for oneself, one's family and economic growth. They are known as diligent workers, performing their jobs well whether it involves highly sophisticated technical ability or physical labor.

  • Politeness;

 Filipinos use of ‘’po’’ and ‘’’opo’’’ when conversing  with an elderly person  or someone older manifests how Filipinos respect their elders. This is mainly due to the influence of Christianity that tells us to honor both our parents and our elders.

  • Pakikisama or Loyalty;

‘’Pakikisama’’’ is a Filipino word which when translated in English means “loyalty”. Filipinos are said to be loyal to their countrymen and friends in order to ensure communal living. This is manifested in their basic sense of justice and fairness and concern for other's well being. Filipinos recognize the essential humanity of all people and regard others with respect and empathy.

  • utang na loob or Gratitude;

 ‘’’utang na loob’’’ is a Filipino word which when translated to English means “gratitude”. Filipinos are known to appreciate the good deeds done to them especially when they are in great need.

  • Hiya or Shame;

 ’’Hiya’’ is a Filipino word which when translated means “shame”. Filipinos are known to be scared of being shamed and as such will go any mile to avoid it. Shame plays an important role as it serves as a yardstick for one to guide his reputation and that of his family. Filipinos can guard their reputation even with their life.

  • Family;

The Filipinos recognize their family as an important social structure that one must take care of. The Philippines is known to be a family oriented nation. Filipinos give much importance to the unity and safety of their family. It is also common to find the whole clan living in the same area as that the Filipinos are afraid to be too far from their own family.

Filipinos usually like their elders to live close to them. They take care of their elderly ones accommodating them in their homes, unlike the Westerners, who send their elderly ones to a nursing homes. They believe that when their elders get old, that it’s time for them to take care of them  and to reciprocate their love to them when they were younger.

  • Flexibility, Creativity, and Adaptability;

Filipinos are known to be humorous people and they are optimistic with their approach to life. The Filipino’s see the reason to laugh at any situation they found themselves in. This is seen in their ability to adapt to any circumstance and environment.

  • Resignation;

Filipino’s are religious people and as such always have faith in God. They believe that everything that happens, happened with a reason and with God’s consent. This shows how free-spirited the Filipinos are.

  • Colonial Mentality;

This is thought that foreign products and talents are best compared to local ones. During the four-century rule of the Philippines by the Spanish and American colonizers, the Filipinos were instiled with the mentality that foreigners and anything that has to do with them is superior compared to them. However, Filipinos still cherish and appreciate their local products and services.
