Here we have analyzed the witness earnings for every block over the last 7 days and calculated the total SP and the corresponding $ value. The earnings charts are displayed below in a variety of visualizations.

Scope of Analysis
The analysis was performed on blocks 18974623 through 19182204. The timestamps for these blocks are January 14, 2018 @ 3:57 PM and January 21, 2018 @ 7:06 PM respectively. The time period is not exactly 7 days due to the inconsistency in block time processing. This is based on an algorithm that gives us a "best guess."
The dollar value of earnings is based on the STEEM/USD conversion rate of $4.72 at the time of posting.
The analysis took place in stages to control for any lapses in node connections or other web services.
Tools
This report was generated using a combination of steem-python and SteemData.
It was performed using three main scripts:
The first script generates block numbers based on the time period of 7 days, and then fetches the producer rewards for these blocks from SteemData.
The second script generates a list of all witnesses with any votes, and ranks them.
The third script cleans the data from both scripts, combining them into one CSV file.

Cluster Distribution
This chart puts in proportion the amount of SP earned by the top 20 witnesses, in relation with the lower-ranked witnesses.
Pie Chart
Here you can see the distribution as part of a pie. As you can see, the top 20 witnesses earn well over 75% of the total overall witness earnings.

As a witness on the lists above, I just want you to know I appreciate these reports. I would like to add, you should explain how it works a little so as not to mislead. I'm witness #77 today, so it's not about me here, but the chart which shows the top 20 making 75%, well, yes, because we are rewarded on a varying rate by level and by software design. They are supposed to make that much more, essentially. It's in the documentation and code that way based on the pay scale. So I hope people don't think it is some expose' of something massively unfair, because it's totally not like that at all.

Excellent point! The top 20 make 75% of the rewards because they do 75% of the work! Not to mention the other projects that they each contribute to on the platform. We certainly don't mean to imply that they are receiving anything unfairly.
