Audacity Tutorial 4 - Use Audacity to Get Rid of Harsh Popping Sounds in Audio

Harsh Sounds in Audio need to Remove from the Audio File if you want a clean professional recording

When we do recording, you will notice that 'harsh' sounds come out from our pronunciation of certain consonants. They creating a popping sound.

All of a sudden, the sound is very sharp and loud.

Which consonants create these harsh popping sounds?

In English, the 'b' or the 'p' consonants create these annoying popping sounds.

No matter how hard you try in softening the 'b' or 'p' sounds in the microphone, they still sound like a small explosion in the audio. This is why in the audacity language, we say the 'p' are 'plosives' sounds.

Even when you put a pop filter in front of the microphones, the recording still catches these explosive sounds in the audio.

I sometimes tried to change the volume when I record, it doesn't help. The explosive 'p' sounds still there.

The 'p' popping sound in the wave files

The following screen shot will show you how the harsh popping sound looks.

You need to get used to watching these wave files and understand them as you use Audacity to edit the wave files.

Learn to spot them right away so that you can stay focused on what you need to do.

Just like yesterday, we looked at the 'heavy breathing' sounds that come out from our breathing. We can now spot them clearly.

Look at the above screen shot and see if you can spot the 'p' sounds in those wave files.

  • I actually made it easy for you by putting a lot of 'p's into the sentence.
  • The above wave is showing this sentence: Peter Piper pays paypal.
  • this means you can easily spot the '6' p's that appear in the wave file above.

After you have done that, then you can continue on in this lecture as you read on.

The places where I circled in 'red', those are the places with the intensive 'p' wave files.

How To Soften Those P Sounds in Audacity?

Step 1: Effect and Equalization

Go to Audacity Upper Menu and Select the following 2 tabs:

  1. Click 'Effect" on the Menu
  2. In the drop down menu, click 'Equalization".

Step 2: Change the Equalization Template

When you click the Equalization tab, you will see the following:

The following big box will pop up:

You are going to create a template for your 'p' sound file by changing the equalization like the above settings.

Since it is difficult to explain how to adjust the equalization on the graph, I have created a video for you to follow along easily. From there you will be able to know how to use the cursor to adjust the line.

Have fun watching the video!

Video Tutorial - Soften those 'P' harsh popping sounds.

Watch the following video and you will be able to follow along easily as to how I do the equalization.

Follow the video to create your template for the 'p' sound in the equalization page. Once you have set a template for yourself to use, you can use this template for all your recordings wherever you hear those 'p' popping sounds.

Follow the video to watch how I do the setting for the equalization. This setting works all the time to soften the harsh "p" sounds.

This is how you create Professional sounding audio files for your business.

Thank you for your attention,

In case we make a Vlog, can we still use Audacity to get rid of that heavy breathing sound we made during recording? Any way, very useful tutorial on how to use Audacity, and I am an open source fan.

Yes, you can still use Audacity. What you need to do is to export your video to a wav file. And use the wav file strip in the Audacity program for the editing.

I see, thanks a lot.
