In simple words, this project brings value to the open source community because it facilitates the creation of all sort of applications using JavaScript, and provides a lot of help and versatility to developers, so much so that well-known companies like Netflix, Paypal, and Uber (among many others) use Node for their online services.

Since Node.js is very easy to learn and it provides a lot of benefits for developers, there is a huge community of people involved with it, which is one of the reasons why this project is available to be translated into several languages (in crowdin, one of the best translation platforms in the web, this project is available to be translated into 33 different languages, Spanish is the one corresponding to this contribution), the ultimate goal of translating Node.js is to make it easier for developers from any country to start learning about this project in their own native language.

Contribution Specifications

• Translation Overview

This is my 64# contribution to Node.js. The content I have been translating consists mostly in very brief instructions originally written by developers, with the goal of fixing a small bug that was affecting the software or correcting little errors in the official Node.js documentation.

One of the reasons that explain why Node.js is such a popular software, is because besides its well-known versatility, it is also an open source project. This means developers from all over the world can have access to its code and experiment with it. The result is a lot of people with technical knowledge constantly figuring out ways to improve the code.

The way all this work is handled is through the GitHub platform, which is designed to help open source projects in managing all the contribution they receive from the community.

Given the fact the instructions I have been translating don’t come from a single developer, each of them has always information about the person who proposed the instruction. This information can be the name of the person or the username. Apart from this, each instruction also includes the related links from GitHub (the commit and the merged pull-request).

A developer realized there was no need to do this, and it was causing problems with Windows due to some incoming changes to that platform. Since instead of benefits in using internal headers there were only problems, a developer shared the instruction to stop using these internal headers.

When running these tests there was a typo in the code that was preventing everything from being properly executed. This was a very basic mistake, and one user that seems to be the one who committed this typo wrote “Ai, did I really misspell that?” ^Source

fix bad utf8 character handling

This bad handling was causing some miscalculations when “checking how many bytes are needed to decode a complete character.” ^Source

Specifically, the problem was that some extra utf8 continuation bytes were appearing at the end of a chunk of data, and this was messing up the calculations. Luckily, a developer discovered this bug and indicated the solution.
