#ulog 5 : What is the difference between blackout poetry and erasure poetry?

in #ulog6 years ago (edited)

Hey there!

It should be obvious by now that I really like poetry. Hahahaha...

Today I'll be discussing with you the difference between a blackout poem and an erasure poem. These two forms of poetry are like rectangles and squares. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. Likewise, a blackout poem is a form of erasure poetry, but not all erasure poems are blackout poetry.

What is a blackout poem?

A blackout poem is created by using a marker (usually a black marker) to redact words from an already established work ( like an essay or a newspaper article) until a few words remain, forming a new poem. Sometimes, the marking made by the marker in concealing the redacted words is used by the poet to form a separate distinct work of art; the markings made by the marker may form a drawing, or the outline of the remaining words may create some sort of a loosely formed figure.

To give you an example, here's a blackout poem made by yours truly:

What is an erasure poem?

Erasure poetry includes any poem formed out of a larger poem.

Here's an example by Jupiter Reed:

So there you have it! I hope you've learned something new today. :)

Thanks for reading! More to come.

Take care,

Nothing less from @virtualself. I like the Lolita reference, by Jupiter Reed! Anyway, good to know that there is a wide variety of poems that we could use. Could you make a Haiku next? Ill be expecting it soon.

What a nice idea you gave me there :)

I'll try hahaha
